No Chitchat Between Clinton and Obama
By LAURIE KELLMAN – 26 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — So close, yet so far away — and so bitter.

Rival Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama came within a foot of each other just before President Bush's State of the Union speech Monday night and managed not to acknowledge each other, and certainly not touch.

Clinton, clad in scarlet, crossed the aisle between their seats on the House floor and reached out a hand to greet Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the Democratic icon whose endorsement she had courted only to lose it to Obama.

Kennedy shook her hand while Obama, wearing a dark suit and standing between the two, turned away.

1. That's rude of Obama
sorry but it makes for a bad photo and he needs to get over that. I would be mad at the Clintons too but you need to learn how to fake civility in DC.

3. Agreed. It does make for a bad photo, and makes him look petty.
Edited on Tue Jan-29-08 02:20 AM by calimary
ESPECIALLY if he does manage to shake bush's hand. THAT I would NOT have done, because, FACE IT: bush is the enemy here, not her. If Obama could work it up to extend a hand to as big a villain as george w. bush, he should be big enough to extend at least that much courtesy to Hillary.

Perception.

Perception is EVERYTHING. He could have been a little more magnanimous - wouldn't have killed him. One should be as graceful and generous a winner as we're all told we're supposed to be if we lose. And Obama CERTAINLY had a better day than she did. I'm glad he got those endorsements, but come on, Senator Obama, let's be just a bit bigger than that, 'eh?

In sticky situations like this, my dad always said "Rise Above It!" And I always hated it when he said that. But he was correct. Hillary at least APPEARED to have done that. Obama appeared not to.

pretty picture!

15. I think what I hate most about all this is that it positions us as AGAIN on the verge
of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

We all just have to bicker about this and fight amongst ourselves, when we should be directing ALL such hostilities and daggers and verbal scud missiles toward those who deserve it the most: the republi-CONS and the Dark Siders running to continue this sickening hostage hold of the White House and the reins of power. THAT is our enemy. THAT is our bad guy. NOT Hillary. NOT Bill. NOT Barack. NOT ANYBODY on our side!!! We've gotta stop this circular firing squad - NOW.

Things that make you go WTF?!??!?!??!?!?

4. That made me smile
"Obama, wearing a dark suit and standing between the two" "Wearing a dark suit." So the reader, viewing the picture, would know who he was talking about. That's nice.

6. What a STUPID and catty NON-STORY. I see AP is doing the bidding of the corporate elite.
This is such a bullshit, "let's generate more sympathy for poor Hillary," NON-STORY. The female sympathy vote helped her in NH, so now she gets help from the AP to pull the same psychological stunt. Nice try, but no dice.

18. Obama is the MSM's favorite son. Pick another talking point.
They spent the day slathering over your man. Really, logic never intrudes on the Obama fancier's world. And you persist in demanding both full credit for your triumph and continued underdog status.

Now go back and find something someone else thought of for you that both works AND pertains to the situation.

It cannot be that hard.

23. Handshakes have ended wars, enacted treatys, symbolically important
These are the stories that people feel safe talking about at work

or out and about.

"You see b*sh fall off that scooter?, what a maroon"

"What's up with Pelosi's eyes? yea that's weird"

"did you hear about Rudy and how he got the cops to limo his girl all over the place? wtf is up with that?"

"Holy shit, I can't believe that shit! He shook the b*shes hand and then turned his back on her? no way" "Way"

"dude, it was funny as hell. He was standing there all friendly like and then when she came over he was like, 'psyche!'"

This entire story has been put together with photographs.

30. It is thought clinton started the less than warm behavior toward Obama (NYT )08/03/07
The relationship began to change, according to several Democrats who are friendly to both senators, when Mr. Obama began musing aloud about a presidential bid. The day he opened his exploratory committee, several Senate observers said, he extended his hand and said hello on the Senate floor. She breezed by him, offering a cool stare.

One week later, following the State of the Union address, the two senators found themselves doing a back-to-back interview on CNN. Mr. Obama went first, with Mrs. Clinton pacing a few feet away. Finally, an aide escorted her completely around the rotunda of the Russell Senate Office Building, avoiding walking directly by Mr. Obama.

Many Senate observers, even those close to Mrs. Clinton, say they believe she set the less-than-collegial tone. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/03/us/politics/03web-zeleny.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
