Maybe I'm naive, but I like ALL of the top three...
While my own primary preference is Sen. Edwards, I won't be crushed or alienated if he doesn't get the nomination.

Sen. Obama is one of my senators, and I supported him in the brutal primary fight back in '04, even though most of my fellow committeemen didn't. I thought then and still think today that he is a brilliant, inspired and thoughtful individual who would and has since done an excellent job as the junior Senator from Illinois.

I love Sen. Clinton, period. She is brilliant, she understands issues in depth, she is s-t-r-o-n-g. She has a wide range of experience in virtually every area anyone elected POTUS will have to deal with. Finally, even though the Republicans will make every effort to 'swift boat' her, if she is our nominee, I have absolutely no doubt that she will shove it right back down their sleazy throats with a speed and viciousness that will leave them reeling.

I see so many spirited attacks and counter-attacks here by supporters and opponents of the 'top three', as I call them, and my reaction to 99% of those threads ranges from disgust to amusement. Frankly, based on the subject line alone, I don't read 2/3 of them, because the content is so predictable. I'm not a political neophyte, having been actively involved Democratic Party politics since I was a child (my grandfather was a county judge), so I completely understand why and how primary fights can get heated, even nasty. 'Records' and 'experience' become keywords in most attack threads, as if somehow each will become the quietus delivered to Candidate X. What most seem to forget, it seems to me, is that in order to NOT have a 'record' or 'experience', one must have DONE NOTHING! Has Sen. Clinton made mistakes? Of course she has. Has Sen. Obama made statements he now likely wishes he hadn't? Of course he has. Has Sen. Edwards cast votes that were, in retrospect, the wrong vote to cast? Of course he has.

I've lived a fairly long time, folks, and I can honestly tell you that I can't EVER remember a primary season where our party has had SOOOOOOOOO MANY *fantastic* candidates running; I frankly wish we could have somehow 'morphed' all of them into a single nominee, but it's a hard fact of political life that that ain't ever gonna happen: some drop out early on, some get their butts handed to them by the voters and just sort of fade away, some survive and continue to fight until they can't fight any longer and, eventually, ONE grasps the brass ring of the nomination. That's how it's always been and will always be.

In closing, I'll return to my subject line. Call me naive, if you will, but our nominee will almost certainly be Sen. Clinton, Sen. Edwards or Sen. Obama (listed alphabetically). Every single one of them stands head-and-shoulders above the dingle berries the Republicans are trying to choose from, and I will PROUDLY, LOUDLY and ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORT whichever one walks away from Denver with the nomination.

That's my bottom line.

1. While certain DU'ers here sure do make it difficult...
..I will too. Despite the whining and banal attacks of the Obama camp, and for all his faults, he's still leagues better than any slime from the Republican side.

4. Well, I'm
in the Obama camp and I think I've been respectful and polite.

Obama
Edwards
Clinton

in that order.

Will vote for any one of them in the General Election. No problem.

6. Yes, you have been great. :)
But as in many situations, it is usually a small fringe that screams the loudest that is the one that gets the most attention.

... I can't even wrap my head around the idea that ANY sane person wouldn't vote for our nominee in November!

83 years old and has NEVER voed for a Democrat for POTUS, but she intends to do so THIS year. I don't think the Repubs realize just how disgusted many lifelong party members are, at this point.

19. Same here, I really can't decide who to vote for
I was leaning towards Biden, but he dropped out. My state doesn't have its primary until March, and by then, I think the candidate will already be decided.

18. The 'clean election' part is what worries me most.
Call me a dinosaur, but I want to go back to hand-counted paper ballots until such time as verifiable, paper-trailed electronic voting machines are MANDATORY. Until then, elections can be 'stolen', as we witnessed in 2000 and 2004.

15. 100% agreement
My fear is that supporters of Obama and Clinton are so arrogant and rude to eachother that they are turning them off the election. Whoever gets the nod in November is going to need ALL of our support. And yet the sniping continues non-stop. I have to believe these are young people who just don't know any better and are just being very shortsighted.

16. I suspect that time will heal most of the wounds.
The internet provides an anonymity that's lacking in any real-world discussion, so people wind up saying things to and about each other (and the candidates they support) that they wouldn't even dream of saying in person. That said, I believe that, deep down, these folks are progressives who will reconcile themselves to whoever our nominee is and vote for him or her. Just like there's always a rose among the thorns, so too will the progressive supporters of all the primary candidates 'bloom' in November and support our nominee.

I've seen VERY nasty primary fights before, but very, VERY seldom do the losing candidates supporters NOT ultimately vote for the winner in the GE.

:)

20. SO true.
My own preference is also Edwards and I completely agree. We can nitpick or complain or have nagging doubts about any of these three, but the lineup on the other side is simply pathetic, and after 7 years of W it will feel like the torture has finally stopped. Literally and figuratively.

21. Hey, Welcome to DU! I couldn't agree more. Whichever candidate
carries the "D" into November with him/her - that's who I'm supporting. I think any of the Big Three would be superb. They each bring marvelous things to the table. They each have their problems and their strengths. And any of 'em is LIGHTYEARS better than what the bad guys offer.

22. You are not naive
you are right.

It is alarming how many people here can not support "their" candidate without somehow seeing it as necessary to attack and destroy the "other" candidates and their supporters. and particularly sad because we have such a great group to choose from.

this is dirty politics at it's worst. if this is the best the most enlightened members of the liberal left have to offer, we are in some deep trouble.

and i think it's time for the grownups in the room to put the children in a time-out until they can behave.

24. Thank you! I loved Sen. Edwards' remark during the SC debate...
... where he said "I represent the grownup wing of the Democratic Party". I'd like to see less bickering and back-biting, and more "Here's MY vision for America, if I gain the nomination".

:applause:

27. K&R
My have only two remaining concerns with the candidates.

First, which will keep their progressive promises.

Secondly, and most importantly, who will bring out the most Democrats, swing the most Independents and suppress the Republican vote. The more Dems we have voting, the stronger the local and State Democratic chances. Additionally, we may finally embolden the Congress to have the balls to move to the left.

But Danger, Danger, Will Robinson:
Republicans are notoriously loyal and stubborn so it is going to be hard to suppress their vote. Even if they hate their candidate, they may vote out of loyalty or spite.
