My mother: voted for Ford, Regan, Regan, Bush, Bush, Dole, Bush and Bush......
....in 2008 she is voting for Obama.

She finds him to be absolutely inspiring and has been going through a crisis of conscience about her conservatism. She says as she listens to Obama, she feels hope and sees how so many of the things she had been ingrained to believe have been so wrong.

As you can see by my icon, I am a John Edwards supporter. But, I don't care who you are supporting, stories like this are happening EVERYWHERE and they are reasons for HOPE. CHANGE IS TRULY IN THE AIR THIS YEAR.

People underestimate charisma. It takes something big to make people look inside and find something different than they knew. Obama has it.

44. She was part of the fundamentalist-chrisitan influence... (more)
interestingly enough, it wasn't moving away from religious faith that changed her, but actually making that faith more personal and more serious that changed her. The more she kept focusing on the words of Jesus, and then looking around at her own peers and church, the more she started to see the hypocrisy.

...and she had a son, frankly who kept pointing out the hypocrisy of the conservative agenda and how incompatible it is with principles of love, compassion, mercy, etc. I argued with her for probably five years, and during that time, slowly, slowly, slowly she began to see just how much she had been brainwashed by evangelical conservatives.

She realized the only reason she had ever been republican in the first place was basically because she was pro-life. She realized that the "authorities" in her old church structure told everyone that voting republican was christian and anything else was not, but they never explained why. My mother began questioning lots of stuff about that old way....

...she left that church, denomination, everything. Over time, she's found a non-denominational church that is focused on community action - it works to ease poverty in her city, works with the homeless, etc. Over the last three years or so, my mom has become quite a liberal.... poverty, and economic justice have become big things to her, and she can talk pretty eloquently (if I do say so myself) about how she was sucked in for so long by a conservative religious dogama that doesn't even make sense but she was trained not to question.

She likes John Edwards the best. But as it starts to become more clear to her that Edwards won't be president, she's found Obama to be incredibly inspiring. My mother is 56. She's voted before Ford, I just didn't have room to list them all. She says that Obama reminds her of Bobby Kennedy, and of course she was around when Kennedy was alive. I think she feels that same sort of inspiration. She definately does not see Obama as republican-lite. That's not me talking there, I'm telling you what she would say.
