Racial divide could hurt Obama beyond SC

By NEDRA PICKLER, Associated Press Writer 6 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The questions surrounding Barack Obama's victory in South Carolina: Was the split between white and black voters an anomaly in a state were the Confederate flag still flies on the statehouse grounds? ...........

What's clear is that for Obama to win the nomination, he will have to improve his performance among white voters over South Carolina. Being the clear favorite among blacks won't be enough as the candidates turn to 22 states that hold contests on Feb. 5.

Obama's overwhelming victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton came with 80 percent of South Carolina's black voters backing him, but only a quarter of whites. Clinton and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards each got about a third of the white vote.

That's a division Obama will have to close if he is to win the nomination.

14. Hillary supporters certainly observe the non-existent racial divide. Curious. Exit polls
have shown this to be bogus. In every state so far this primary season.

12. RACE RACE RACE...SHUT YOUR FAT FACES
This crap is really pissing me off. He is not about race. He is a leader who will bring people together and the mainstream media who is totally into race cannot get it. I am a former Republican who is supporting him with money, time, energy, and words. If Democrats nominate him there are many more like me that will cross over. It just so happens that I gave up on the Republican Party over the war. That opened my eyes to many other things. Obama is the kind of leader who can open a lot of people's eyes.

38. Hillary sided with the Republican agenda more than enough.....you miss the point entirely!
Obama reaches out beyond party lines because: 1) his message is that of unity not division, 2) Obama realizes that in order to win we have to appeal to more voters than previous elections.

Some Democrats seem to value purity tests to victory. Better not reach out to independents or cross overs. Let's just stay together...say kumbaya a lot....complain about the fascist corporate state...pat each other on the back....and continue to complain why we always lose elections.

But with Obama, there is no need to worry about purity. Obama is definately a progressive, more so than Hillary anyhow. It is true that Edwards speaks a more populist vein these days, but his past is not pure either.

Obama's words are inspirational. I wish him luck. I was hoping today that Edwards would win. But either Edwards or Obama would do just fine. Why? Because a Hillary nomination is the Republicans' Wet Dream!

15. Clyburn is keeping the race memo alive:
"I think those people that were campaigning, drawing attention to this man's race and trying to get him off message, I think those people were rejected tonight," Clyburn said.

42. OK....I'll take the bait...Hillary supporters are racists....sarc
Heck, most of them go into catatonia whenever Hillary is criticised. They say it is sexist. Mysogynistic. Woman-hating. Against motherhood, apple pie, and Rosie the Riveter too!

Seriously, I wish the Hillary Herd would quit making race the issue. I wish they would quit trying to diminish the importance of Martin Luter King Jr by saying it takes a president to get the Civil Rights Act done (even though it was passed first by Congress).

I think it backfired. They thought that Obama would not win by such a decisive margin among many groups in SC. They hoped he would win by such a margin as to be explained by race alone. Boy were they wrong!

Now they are rightly to be viewed as being divisive in an attempt for their own political gain.

This is the old style politics that has turned off millions of Americans. It is also the old style politics that the followers of Obama want to change.

26. Obama did not win across demographic lines
he won 73% to 77% of the black vote

and he only won half of the non-black under age 29

sorry, but those results mean Obama is NOT winning across demographic lines

It's fascinating the way the goalposts have moved now that Obama has scored a touchdown.

I seem to recall a time when a primary win was a primary win. He won. But now, he didn't win the "right" way -
