Obama Snags St. Louis Post-Dispatch Endorsement

Huffington Post January 26, 2008 03:52 PM

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is endorsing Barack Obama in the upcoming Feb. 5 Democratic presidential primary, the Obama campaign announced Saturday. The Post-Dispatch, which is the largest paper in Missouri, also circulates in Southern Illinois. Voters in both states head to the polls on Feb. 5.

The Post-Dispatch writes that:

We disagree with the details of some of Mr. Obama's legislative proposals, particularly his heavy reliance on insurance companies as part of an overhaul of national health policy. But we are comforted by his legislative career in Springfield and in Washington, where he worked diligently across party lines, seeking common ground and, often, finding it. He offers a welcome return to civility and cooperation.

We're afraid that wouldn't be the case with his principal opponent for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York. She has been a diligent senator since her election in 2001, but she is a lightning rod. There is a difference, too, between seeking consensus and "triangulating" core principles into positions palatable to campaign donors.

And we confess to a certain "Clinton fatigue." The emergence of the former president as the Luca Brasi of the campaign trail reminds us of the worst of the Clinton years: the divisiveness and the bickering; the too-casual, if artful, blend of truth and half-truth. We're not eager for the replay. As to John Edwards, the former senator from North Carolina, he is the right man at the wrong time, a star whose light is eclipsed by the tail of a comet.

Comets don't come around that often. In January of 1961, Ann Dunham Obama was six weeks pregnant with Barack Obama Sr.'s child when President Kennedy said at his inauguration that "the torch has been passed to a new generation." It's that time again.

The full endorsement will be posted on the Post-Dispatch Web site, http://www.stltoday.com">stltoday.com

7. I'm sorry it wasn't for John Edwards, but that is one hell of an
endorsement, and an indictment of the "Clinton" years. I just don't understand why anyone, in his right mind, wants a replay of that madness. The Clintons, as the article states, are very divisive and polarizing which begs the question, how much of her agenda can she really expect to get through Congress? Because if Hillary is at the top of the ticket, I predict that everything down-ticket will suffer, and we'll be looking at another deadlocked, do-nothing Congress.

9. The Post Dispatch was bought out a few years back and has been going more and more to the right ...
They have dropped Democratic editorials and columnists by the barrel full.
Many locals have stopped their subscription because of this .
Just FYI.

10. would your assessment have been quite the same had they
endorsed HRC? My God people, not everyone is enamored with the Clintons, nor can they all be dismissed as "Clinton Haters", or rightwingers. Hell, there's enough people within the party who don't want HRC as the nominee, otherwise there wouldn't still be three frontrunners.

12. I support Edwards and LIVE in Missouri! I know my local paper thanks!
They dropped Maureen Dowd for one and I know one of their local guys, whose name I won't mention because it might get him in trouble with his bosses who said they had TOLD him to "back off" on some controversial stuff,
Make of it what you will!
I KNOW what I'm speaking of!

16. If you're not guilty, please accept my apologies...
but Maureen Dowd? I'm sorry, but I've never considered Mo Dowd a paragon of progressive virtue. Judging from some of her columns, you'd certainly have to question her progressive credentials. That being said, you've surely been around here long enough to know that any endorsement not in HRC's favor is quickly dismissed as a "rightwing smear job". Or, "it's a Rupert Murdoch rag"...I think you get my drift.

I was merely pointing out that anything perceived as negative about the Clintons is dismissed, out of hand, by her supporters.

15. Sounds pretty good to me!

(they all have the insurance companies in their health plans)
