Center for Promise and Opportunity (what's up with this Edwards "charity")
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/22/us/politics/22edwards.html?_r=3&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

snip:

Mr. Edwards, who reported this year that he had assets of nearly $30 million, came up with a novel solution, creating a nonprofit organization with the stated mission of fighting poverty. The organization, the Center for Promise and Opportunity, raised $1.3 million in 2005, and — unlike a sister charity he created to raise scholarship money for poor students — the main beneficiary of the center’s fund-raising was Mr. Edwards himself, tax filings show.

A spokesman for Mr. Edwards defended the center yesterday as a legitimate tool against poverty.

The organization became a big part of a shadow political apparatus for Mr. Edwards after his defeat as the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2004 and before the start of his presidential bid this time around. Its officers were members of his political staff, and it helped pay for his nearly constant travel, including to early primary states.

That sounds like the John Edwards that Russ Feingold is talking about...

2. dude from 6/22/07
That was a complete hit piece. Edwards did not benefit in any way from that center. All the money went to the purpose of the center. In short, it is a complete distortion of the truth. Obama supporters should understand that.

3. Really? Here's another blog article on the same matter...
it even deals with some of Obama's dirty laundry re earmarks. Is this a "hit piece" too? Is everything a "hit piece" if you don't like it?

http://halfricanrevolution.blogspot.com/2007/06/obama-discloses-earmarks-proposes.html

That guy didn't seem to think the NY Times article was a hit piece?

Do you even know much about any of this? Anyone can hit the "gaa...msm...hit piece button".

Enlighten me because I don't think the NY times is too over the top here.

I only came accross this as I am investigating the different candidate's earmark practices.

It is something worth discussing.

Edwards is not the second coming of Paul Wellstone.

5. There is some info here
http://www.tpmcafe.com/blog/electioncentral/2007/jun/22/edwards_campaign_times_refused_to_talk_to_beneficiaries_of_his_anti_poverty_programs

But we've just learned something new and surprising about the story. The Edwards campaign has just told us on the record that The Times refused the chance to talk to any real, live beneficiaries of Edwards' programs.

~
That's what makes it a hit piece. The intention to lead in only one direction.

I know you must think Edwards supporters are total dumb shits but some of us actually know he's just a politician as was Wellstone-as they all are. I have no heroes but I have a few a like a bit more and am enjoying especially when they have been discounted by the media and ironically are being called too far left. A good laugh no? But that's the one I know is the threat.

4. Ahh shit.. everyone knows what non-profit org. at top level do.. take a look
at the Red Cross.. ever gander at the Director's salaries? And then the money doesn't go to where its needed.. You think the Rockefellers are about doing good? Or protecting their ass-ets? The Ford Foundation... The various cancer cure foundations.. All of these non-profits would lose out big time if our govt stepped up and did for US, rather than using corp. handouts to go shopping at the corp. stores... I don't care.. he used his tours to create awareness.. You can't do that on nothing can you. Last time I looked it still cost money to ride on an airplane or stay in a hotel room or take an entourage with him.. I'd rather him take money from non-profit org. that brings awareness about poverty, than take a dime from the corp. backers behind Clinton or Obama.
