Poll question: Should Michelle, Bill, and Elizabeths K & E all just STFU, go home, and stay there?
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 01:12 PM by MethuenProgressive
Recent comments about candidate's spouses have fired up the discussion board of late.
Do you think candidate's husbands and wifes should be banned from campaigning?
Should Michelle, Bill, and Elizabeths E & K all STFU and go home?
Or should just Bill, because people are jealous of all the attention he gets?

2. It is up to their spouses to tell them what to do
If the candidate judges their spouse's actions to be detrimental, then it is up to the candidate to tell them to be quiet. If the spouses are still talking, I take it that the candidates agree with what their spouses are doing.

9. You think one spouse should be able to tell the other spouse "what to do"?
That's so Donna Reed.

13. In this case, yes
because I assume in all cases that the spouse wants the candidate to win. And, like any other key spokesperson for the campaign, the candidate has the final say on what their spokespeople say.

Ah, those were the days. right?

22. huh?
You don't think a candidate has the right to tell their spokespeople if the candidate feels they are doing a poor or good job?

I don't understand your comments, frankly. Why would you call Mr. Clinton "little woman"?

21. I must agree, on the scope of the campaign. The spouse has the role in the
campaign agreed to with the candidate.

If my partner were running for office my activities on the campaign would be his call. Same is true of the reverse.

3. Absolutely not.
Each of the spouses is a potential First Lady or First Gentleman, and I see zero problem with them campaigning.

11. I think that the voters do, too.
Like it or not, the presidential elections are largely a popularity contest, and the public likes to see who else might be inhabiting the WH in the next term. There's always been a lot of interest in presidential spouses - that isn't about to change now.

4. They have the right to campaign for & endorse anyone they want.
Same for Oprah and various other celebrities or political figures. Why should anyone be told they shouldn't act on their convictions? But on the other hand we lament that Americans are apathetic about politics....

5. I am just sick of hearing from Bill Clinton
making noises about how Hillary is going to lose this state or that state. It's really annoying.

6. Bill has an advantage the others don't.
He's a former president. He gets more media attention than the rest do, combined.

14. I think spouses should stick to positives.
Leave the attacks and rebuttals to the candidate and the surrogates. Family members should stay above the fray, IMO.

15. All campaigns have surrogates. Whether family or not - fact of life
Whether surrogates post on DU (like EE) or appear on TV like the others - they are supporters of the candidates. Like any of us.

18. Not banned - but voters shouldn't pay attention to them
And I would prefer if they voluntarily excluded themselves. I've never liked the American style of politicking. In American elections, you've got to do or say certain things or everyone will be scandalized. You've got to say that you have faith in God. And you've got to involve your spouse, your children, your dog, your dog's cat, ad nauseum. In European elections, no one cares who a candidate is having sex with. No one would think of looking to a candidate's spouse for a political opinion.
