in South Carolina. Looks kinda divided to me. Will this win him the nomination? Would he win a single Southern state in the general?

4. Is Iowa representative of more of the US than South Carolina?

5. I don't think either Iowa or SC are very representative of the US
if you want my opinion.

7. I don't know... I think SC is reasonably representative of the South. Iowa -- not much.

6. If people voted strictly by race,
Obama would have gotten 3% in Iowa. And New Hampshire. And Nevada.

8. People don't vote strictly by race, but there is a discomfortingly high
correlation in places that have significantly large black populations.

22. So in NH and NV, when Hillary and Obama essentially tied,
people did not vote by race. But in SC, after Obama and Hillary essentially tie, but Obama is slightly ahead, winning in a squeaker as Hillary did in NH and NV, his win is due to the black vote.

Do you have ANY idea how racist that is?

11. But lets not forget that this country has a history of Whites not supporting
blacks. I mean I wont forget rosewood and how an entire black community was destroyed because a lot of white folks in town wanted to believe a white womans lie instead of investigating to find the truth. As much as he can try for unity (which I think is a great message) it doesn't mean that whites (not saying everyone) will accept a black man.

I know some will jump on me for this reply. But honestly take a look at ourselves and ask your friends to really have an open discussion about race. I think many will be surprised. I know I was shocked when my mom said that "there are many white people who don't like to see blacks move in right next door. They can say they are for black rights but if we move next door some assume we will lower their property value." Comments like this are being thought up and noted in peoples minds. So while people talk a good game about being able to accept a black man as president... I highly doubt we will actually ever see it become reality.

16. So I was looking at a house in NLR
Edited on Wed Jan-23-08 05:29 PM by sandnsea
We had just moved there from Montana because my mother was very sick. Across the street was a Native American family getting into their car. The landlady looks square at us and says "They are a nice Indian family, not like having the blacks." The irony is that in Montana the racists would have said "They are a nice black family, not like having the Indians."

When people around here deny racism, well I just don't know how they do it with a straight face. But I still think there are enough white people who move beyond prejudice to vote for the individual.

18. That makes me angry. And proves my point that America still
has a negative few of blacks and other minorities in this country. I mean I should be the first to admit that even within black culture we have a big divide in terms of light skin vs dark skin blacks. It goes back to those plantations where white masters wanted to keep blacks apart because once they come together they might over throw the master.

"When people around here deny racism, well I just don't know how they do it with a straight face. But I still think there are enough white people who move beyond prejudice to vote for the individual."

I like this quote because you have something that I had before all of this race baiting which is HOPE. You still believe that enough white people will move beyond prejudice. I grew up in a white community and I know many positive and non prejudice white people so I did believe that this election wouldn't focus on race and be a good clean fight. But when it turned to race and I see how different racial groups are voting its pissed me off and all that hope has now turned into shame.

12. IA, Rural NV & Rural NH
Maybe when the south sees midwest white states voting for him, they'll get a little shame about themselves and stop acting like it's still 1860. Present company excluded.

That helps make the OP's point. This is the "unity" Obama is bringing?

14. Nationally Obama is tied with Edwards among whites and Hispanics
Only getting three-fifths of black support is keeping his national numbers high. What will he do on Super Tuesday in states with small black populations?

17. Obama gets 18% of whites, Clinton 16% of blacks.
Do we not criticize her for not achieving unity? Or it does not matter, since she makes no pretense of achieving unity?

21. Yes, that's correct. She hasn't made unity a central theme of her campaign.
And wisely so, I'd say. Unity is not the most pressing need for the nation at this particular time.

The majority of black voters supporting the best candidate, white voters... not so much.
