Women give Clinton commanding lead in Florida
Shirley Sumner, 90, hopes 2008 brings something that "never, never, ever" occurred to her as a girl: a female president of the United States.

Even 10 years ago, "I never would have thought it. It was so far back in my mind that I never saw it."

Sumner isn't taking a chance that this opportunity will slip by. At Sunrise Lakes, the sprawling complex of more than 9,000 mostly retired condominium voters, she's coordinating phone banks to get out the vote for Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Jan. 29 primary.

2. Ouch! Are women too stupid to know what wicked schemers the Clinton people are?
That's what the Obama people seem to be saying.

3. "Those are bread-and-butter issues for women that matter."

The poll of 500 likely Democratic voters was taken Jan. 14 through 16. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.

U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, was the youngest woman elected to the Florida House when she went to Tallahassee at age 26. Elected to Congress in 2004 at age 38, Wasserman Schultz is a national campaign co-chairwoman for Clinton.

Wasserman Schultz said Clinton appeals to women for reasons beyond gender. She said the issues Clinton has championed over the years, such as early childhood education and health care, resonate with women.

"Those are bread-and-butter issues for women that matter. And to have someone who sees the world through their prism is just an opportunity that's just too good to miss," she said.

That's borne out in the Sun-Sentinel/Times-Union poll. Clinton supporters were more likely to cite access to affordable health care and quality education as their top concerns. Obama supporters were more likely to cite the war in Iraq

5. Hey, who knows, perhaps there is still time for
Condi Rice to get in on the repuke side.

Then everyone who votes with this logic gets what they want. Woman, CHECK. Black, CHECK. Human, (err, uhh, let me get back to you on that)

so I can blindly support him, no matter what his policies are.

12. Did you actually read the article?
"There are so many good things about her, I just don't know where to start. She's bright. She's sharp. She's intelligent. She can stand up to anyone and win her point. Her issues, I don't think there is one of them I can disagree with," Sumner said. "I admire the woman for coming through all the adversity she has come through and holding her head up high."

14. well, i was basing that off the people I know in my life
who don't follow politics and don't know Hillary's positions on any issues. They probably wouldn't be supporting anyone if a woman wasn't running, but since there is, they're supporting her.

16. Maybe they're not as blind as you think they are.
Maybe you should listen to them, and try to gain some understanding of why that would happen.

and they don't know issues. And really, they don't care. I've tried talking with them about it, but they just want a woman president - any woman - I don't think it's a Hillary thing at all.

33. Maybe they don't want to talk about it with you because you spend the conversation evangelizing for
Obama. Women won't always tell you to your face why they think you're wrong or spend time and energy arguing for the sake of argument. I would, but many women I know wouldn't. We are socialized to avoid conflict. You're opinion is different than theirs so some women are likely to just change the subject, and withhold knowledge and opinions they do have in order to avoid any belittling by you or discord in the group.

27. Keep it up....!!!!!
Keep insulting women and their intellect....the more likely we will vote for her. Because we are sick and tired of hearing your sexist crap.

The one thing HRC has going for her...her policies will be good for women and children. She won't give just lip service to Choice and birth control as well as Head Start.

And if she becomes prez, I hope she has an affair! lol!

7. So sad that woman would vote for her JUST because she is a woman
and the woman I know who are supporting her are doing just that. I have waited my whole life for a woman President - about half as long as Shirley Sumner - but even so - I'm not voting for her just because she is a woman - I'm not voting for her period. Only time I would vote for a woman because she is a woman is if she was the same or BETTER on issues and policy - as her male opponents then I would play the gender card - but since Hillary is bought and paid for by the corporations and stands for NOTHING but election this woman voting in Florida will not vote for her.

Same holds true for race....

All that being said I am happy for the women who can support her - I only wish I could....it would be nice....and I am sad that I can't. My sister is a perfect example - she does not have a CLUE about politics - doesn't particularly care - she is voting for Clinton simply because she is a woman and is rather stunned that I'm not - unfortunately ahe won't even listen for one second why I am not - oh well.

9. I'm not exactly sure why my post was snobby
your original post seems to indicate that this Shirley woman IS voting for Clinton because she is a woman. It was not my intent to be snobby - I am saying that the woman I KNOW - not all woman but the woman I know - who are voting for Clinton and there are only a few of them - are doing so because she is a woman - that is fact because they have told me that....MOST of the women I know feel exactly the same as I do about Clinton.

My point is we should not be voting for anyone because of their race or gender - would we want to vote for Kay Bailey Hutchison because she is a woman - or Allen Keyes because he is black.

That was my point - and I don't get why that is snobby. Believe me if Hillary Clinton had not let me down so many effing times I would LOVE to support her - because I would LOVE to have a woman President - but I don't like her politics and that trumps gender....

11. You might have made a less snobby post if you actually read the article.
"There are so many good things about her, I just don't know where to start. She's bright. She's sharp. She's intelligent. She can stand up to anyone and win her point. 29. Edwards is my first choice because
his anti-corporate greed message is music to my ears and I have long awaited to hear a candidate talk of that...but I would vote for Hilliary in a heartbeat.

She will be very good for women and children...reverse all of the crap that W has done to them.

BTW, why isn't the same argument used regarding obama? Don't you think there are people out there who are voting for him because he is partially Afro-American?

And for that matter, don't men vote for a man simply because he is a man? Now that a woman is in the race, that statement can be made, can't it?

25. Really..
When I see the BS posts about corporations owning Hillary, it just reinforces my opinion, they don't know or understand Hillary at all. Hillary is pro-election reform, that means no corporate funding and that is the agenda she is going to push once she's elected. (mentioned at the SC debate)

Bush has always been about the tail wagging the dog. Well, I believe Hillary will be the dog wagging her own tail. Corporations and Insurance companies have had their run at the American people. They are not going away anytime soon in a global economy and will have to acquiesce to corporate reforms legislated by a majority in the Dem Congress.

Hillary is our best Hope for a return to a stable and prosperous economy and an end to the War in Iraq.
