If it has to be explained to you, then I wonder whether or not you even type your own posts.

Seems less like a serious question and more like a "gotcha" question-- the kind we hear on A.M. talk radio stations.

But then, as I've neither chosen nor ruled out a candidate yet, I'm probably blinded by a sense of neutrality...

2. Sí se puede
Sí se puede
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search

Sí se puede (Spanish for "Yes, It can be done!") is the motto of the United Farm Workers. In 1972, during Cesar Chavez's 25 day fast in Phoenix, Arizona, he and UFW's co-founder, Dolores Huerta came up with the slogan.<1>

The phrase drew widespread political and media attention as a rallying cry during the 2006 U.S. immigration reform protests.

40. OK -- here's the fallacy ....
Shuck and jive is not MERELY a use of black slang. It is a use of a black slang PERJORATIVE (and stereotype) by a non-black major public figure about a major African-American political figure. Hearing the use of the phrase, it is hard at least for many people (not needing ANY connexion whatsoever to the Obama campaign, as HRC has implied) not to think of race and about Obama. It is a reminder, in a negative AND KNOWINGLY PROVOCATIVE WAY of Obama's being African American.

The provocative issue is key because, like the 'minstrel show' GOP Convention in 2000, it predictably spawns a lot of discussion BY OTHERS of the 'race' issue, and therefore puts it front and center in the minds of voters (of whom the vast majority are white).

Aside from the MORALITY of the issue, it seems to be a dangerous game to try and play within the Democratic Party, but maybe I am naively optimistic here. But note how raising the immigration issue for reasons of pure heat and no light in 2006 didn't do the Repugs much good.

52. Earlier on this thread, I had likened that phrase to an Amos and Andy style stereotype,
that would be relatively benign. But I'll now go for your use of the word: "pejorative". And I'm now starting to get PISSED at the implication expressed earlier that: "Si Se Puede!", was just a Hispanic "ethnic thing"! As another poster commented, it's strongly grounded in unionism AND justice! It happens to be the ONLY Spanish phrase that not only stirs my blood, but comes to my tongue naturally. I can say it in my sleep.

"Si Se Puede!"

I love apologists for racism.

Andrew Cuomo, Attorney General for the State of New York... made very obnoxious and unacceptable comments directed at a black presidential candidate. You may think that's funny or nothing to be upset about, but it was done explicitly to divide and conquer as race baiting.

That's an activist slogan, and referring to the power of hitherto "powerless" people uniting and finding power. WHO could regard that as a "racial" slur?

But "Shuck and jive"? Probably not a "slur", but an Amos & Andy style stereotype!

49. I never marched with Cesar Chavez,
but I used up a lot of shoe leather marching in behalf of his Farm Workers Union. A souvenir of one such march, is a cassette tape labeled: "Si Se Puede!"

Solidarity Forever!
When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run,
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun;
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one,
But the union makes us strong.

CHORUS:
Solidarity forever,
Solidarity forever,
Solidarity forever,
For the union makes us strong.

Is there aught we hold in common with the greedy parasite,
Who would lash us into serfdom and would crush us with his might?
Is there anything left to us but to organize and fight?
For the union makes us strong.

It is we who plowed the prairies; built the cities where they trade;
Dug the mines and built the workshops, endless miles of railroad laid;
Now we stand outcast and starving midst the wonders we have made;
But the union makes us strong.

All the world that's owned by idle drones is ours and ours alone.
We have laid the wide foundations; built it skyward stone by stone.
It is ours, not to slave in, but to master and to own.
While the union makes us strong.

They have taken untold millions that they never toiled to earn,
But without our brain and muscle not a single wheel can turn.
We can break their haughty power, gain our freedom when we learn
That the union makes us strong.

In our hands is placed a power greater than their hoarded gold,
Greater than the might of armies, magnified a thousand-fold.
We can bring to birth a new world from the ashes of the old
For the union makes us strong.

27. Two part response...
First: Obamistas? Are we all serving lattes as we support the senator? Ya want foam on that?

Anyway, unless someone is trying to be "hip" or riffin' on that whole 70's Good Times thing, I very rarely hear shuckin' and jivin'. I can't imagine why anyone would refer to the campaign strategies of opponents as shuckin' and jivin' when one of the opponents is of color unless they were high or had a particularly bad head bump in the not too distant past.

Mind you, didn't pay attention to local campaigns until the last couple of years, so I may have missed previous uses of this oh so common phrase.

And si se puede is the spanish version of his campaign slogan, isn't it?
