WASHINGTON — She may not have Barack Obama's easy charisma or his inspirational speaking style, but as her advisers see it, Hillary Rodham Clinton has one trump card her rival from Illinois can't match: the economy.
As voters become more concerned about the economy's increasingly shaky outlook, Clinton strategists believe she needs to focus her campaign message on this variation of Bill Clinton's 1992 theme: "It's the economy again, stupid."
"This is a very important part of her campaign message and her campaign agenda," said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, one of Clinton's national campaign co-chairs.
There's good reason Clinton and other candidates are refocusing on the national economy. The stock market fell sharply Friday amid a three-week swoon. Retail sales have sputtered. And the nation's largest mortgage lender put itself on the auction block as a result of bad loans and plunging home values.
