9. I think psychologically, the fact that Lincoln was a Republican hurts him
Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 04:58 PM by antiimperialist
Even though some people don't know that the Republican party was the equivalent of today's Democratic party. The party of change. The party of reason, while the Democratic party was the conservative, reactionary party. I have no problem with him having been a Republican.

Edited on Sat Jan-12-08 05:06 PM by antiimperialist
I understand though. All Lincoln did was keep the nation from splitting in half and abolishing slavery.

agriculterally, politically, socially, etc basically two different trains of thought. not only did he prevent the us from splitting up he got us to finally join together as a unified country.

15. I wouldn't rank Jefferson as the greatest president but many of his ideas
were brilliant and had the most positive effects on the country as a whole.

22. Yes - big fan of Jefferson but not as president
As I recall the 3 things Jefferson requested be written on his tombstone were author of Declaration of Independence, founder of Univ. of VA, and author of VA Bill of Religious Freedoms (probably getting that name wrong).

And yes, I know he owned slaves.

25. It is really hard to choose between Lincoln and FDR.
IMO, in the prospective of history, they are the presidents that dealt with the greatest crises
in our national narrative. They both succeeded beyond any expectations at the time. They
both saved our country from unraveling. They were brilliant dedicated true patriots.
