I wasn't surprised when I read in the Politico today that "

In an article titled "HRC gives Obama, union a kick in the shins", Politico quotes a worker saying, "she’s ignoring the Obama endorsement and backing Clinton. Many of her co-workers are doing the same, she said.

I am not surprised. It's not that easy to make people vote for X candidate by means of a big announcement.

The union decides what candidate best fits the needs of the whole membership. Individuals are not pestered into supporting anybody.

I mean, look at all the blue collar dickheads back in the '80s that voted Reagan.. the very antithesis of everything labor stands for. It wasn't like Reagan got those union endorsements!

19. What is an endorsement?

An endorsement is a show of support for a candidate with volunteers and contributions as an organization. It is not binding on the members.

Not knowing the procedure used by the Culinary Workers my perception would be for the union officers to conduct an endorsement meeting. The meeting should at a minimum consist of representatives from each of the local unions.

My preference would be to only endorse for the General Election. Why? If an organization endorses a candidate in the Primary they would also make the maximum contribution allowed. If the candidate does not become the nominee for the General Election both the organization and nominee lose. The candidate is not likely to receive the maximum allowable contribution from the organization because unions do operate with limited funds regardless of what others might say. If the organization waits until the nominee is decided they still have the option to contribute during the primary and general election cycle to ONE candidate.

At best these days, Unions are able to moderately influence their members votes. But an endorsement received this late gives a union virtually no chance to rally their ranks. But it does still provide money for the candidate to campaign with, and great press, which Obama has already benefitted from.
