A union endorsing a candidate does not imply that all members have to support that candidate. Typically, union endorsement gets press, and often rallies union members to canvass and phone bank, etc. for the endorsed candidate, but what individual union members do with their caucus vote is their own choice.
When Kerry ran in 2004, the Fire Fighters union endorsed him, and we had TONS of fire fighters caucus for him at our precinct. In 2008, the Fire Fighters endorsed Dodd, and he wasn't even viable at our precinct this time. Caucusing for your candidate of choice is nothing at all like crossing picket line. Being in a union doesn't mean being lock-step.
