Huckabee "irregardless"
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 05:47 PM by LVZ
Okay, I assumed that when Huckabee said that he did not believe in evolution, he was really just pandering to his base. But using "irregardless", a non-word of the truly uneducated, in his New Hampshire speech today made me reconsider that assumption.

I guess this guy really is a hick. :eyes:

I've never before heard of a politician at that level ever use irregardless twice within 10 seconds. I guess I won't "misunderestimate" his Arkansas educational influence again.

17. Skipos, you're great
I couldn't care less; I didn't mince words; the point is moot.

And, actually, irregardless is in the Merriam Webster dictionary, though it's labeled nonstandard. I guess it sounds more forceful than regardless. It could also be a word that's become blended with irrespective.

Another word that has never made sense to me is "unpicking" a seam. Used often by people around here.

18. in Huckabee's defense: he uses "try to" and not "try and"
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 08:50 PM by LVZ
The misuse of "try and" when you mean "try to" is even more offensive to my ears. I hear the "try and" mistake from more than 50% of the supposedly educated TV journalists.

My other "local" pet peeve is the number of national journalists who still cannot pronounce my home state, Nevada, correctly.
(Hint: it is not pronounced in the Spanish or 'Guvernator' way.)

3. Don't be so quick to criticize
Edwards said "eksetera" several times last night.
(Not defending Huckabee, just saying that our candidates can be just as hicky at times.)

8. It's a pet peeve of mine, too
It's just incorrect grammar. I would expect a former Governor to know better.

9. Much Admired in Pubbie Know-Nothing Circles
The misuse of English is much admired in Pubbie anti-Enlightenment circles. You know, the "you think that because you're from the reality-based community" types.

This is the subject of much amusement on the part of Pubbie intellectuals, who ordinarily refuse to let the rest of us in on the joke.

The joke for us, of course, is to see those same Pubbie intellectuals squirm at the thought/sight/words of Mike Huckabee.

13. Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less Function: adverb
Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: \ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\
-
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
Date: circa 1912
nonstandard : regardless
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.

There are a lot of things to smack him about...this isn't really one of them.

14. IMO, disadvantaged ordinary Joe: excusable. Former Governor: rather Dumbya.
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 06:36 PM by LVZ
While use of this particular non-word is, regrettably, all too common, a former Governor should know better by now and, IMO, we should have higher expectations and standards for our leaders.

15. I Was Just About To Write That
Having lost an argument about the word once. And I also agree, that there is so much to call him on, this is at the bottom of my list. Of course, maybe I've had my standards lowered after almost of 8 years of Chimp talk.
