If the Democratic primary were held today, Clinton would receive 32 percent of the vote compared to 28 percent for Obama and 19 for Edwards, according to the poll of 403 likely Democratic voters.
Last June, Clinton had a 22-point lead, with 38 percent to Obama's 16 . That lead has now dwindled to 4 points in the poll which, with a margin of error of 4.9%, puts the two in a statistical dead heat.
At the same time, John Edwards' support rose from 12 percent in September to 19.
"What appeared to be a race characterized by a single front runner for most of the year, these results indicate that the race has really tightened among the top three candidates," said Myers.
The results for the remaining Democratic contenders are: Bill Richardson, 8 percent; Joe Biden, 3; Chris Dodd, 1; Dennis Kucinich, 1; Mike Gravel, 0.
The telephone survey was taken between Dec. 27 and Dec. 31.
