Why I support Joesph Biden :
Edited on Thu Dec-20-07 05:20 PM by The Village Idiot
I support Joe Biden because he is rational.

And because he is a principled pragmatist.

And because he is a humble man who knows suffering.

Joe Biden is passionate, but he is not an ideologue.

Joe Biden is beholden to the publics' interests, NOT ANY special interest.

Joe Biden burns with fire...he does not merely obscure with smoke.

However, despite these and many other fine qualities, it is his demonstrated commitment to action that drives my support. His RECORD speaks to his determination to effect values which I, and our party and our nation hold dear.

The following excerpts from Joe Biden's record speak powerfully to me. Perhaps they will speak to you, as well.

- PROTECT THE OPPRESSED (an unapproachable record on civil rights; authored Violence Against Women
Act; a leader in the effort to end the genocide in the Balkans and in Darfur)

- DARFUR (Biden's Plan for Darfur, now before the Senate in S. Res. 276,would make it U.S. policy to
stop the violence by deploying a robust international peacekeeping force, ensure access for
humanitarian workers and negotiate a durable political settlement)

- IRAQ (Biden Exit Plan, now having passed both houses and before the executive, calling for a
decentralized federal system)

- EDUCATE THE NATION (Biden Education Plan: move to a sixteen year system; focus on retaining &
training teachers; reduce class size)

- FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING (leading the effort to pass the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act;
supports the Clean Power Act; as chairman of the SFRC, wrote a bipartisan resolution directing the
President to return to international negotiations and reclaim a leadership role in the fight against
global warming)

- PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT (wrote Biden Debt for Nature plan to give debt relief to developing nations
who protect rain forests and other environmental assets; supports polluter pays superfund; wants
permanent protection for ANWR; fights efforts to rollback environmental safeguards)

- FIND ENERGY INDEPENDENCE (wrote flexfuel vehicle legislation, wrote legislation raising renewable
fuel standard benchmarks)

- LOCAL SECURITY (authored Biden Crime Bill, adding 100,000 cops to America's streets; authored the
Adam Walsh Act to assure convicted sex offenders do not slip through the cracks to re-offend against
our children; wrote legislation providing funds to states for building prisons if they agree to keep
their violent offenders behind bars for at least 85 percent of their sentence; authored the Second
Chance Act to provide ex-offenders with with housing, drug and alcohol treatment, job training, and
other life skills, providing them with the skills they need to rejoin their families and
communities).

- NATIONAL SECURITY (a proven leader on foreign relations; promotes international realism; authored
Biden Iraq Exit Plan; authored legislation to fight global warming, promote energy independence, and
establish rational energy policy)

- HEALTH CARE (Joe Biden’s CARE four step plan toward universal health care: cover all children;
access for adults; reinsurance for catastrophic cases; encouraging prevention and modernization)

- ENERGY (Joe Biden's Energy and Climate Change Security Plan: responsible foreign policy toward Iran;
restore US leadership on climate change; increase fuel efficiency & use of renewable fuels; invest
in new energy technology; expand renewable energy; require efficient energy use by Federal Gov't;
encourage efficient private energy use; create green jobs in tomorrow's technology).

The above is hardly an inclusive list of all Joe Biden's accomplishments and efforts. They are those which speak most powerfully to me. What I know for certain is that with Joe Biden, what you see is what you get - it's as plain, simple and effective as that. What Joe Biden has done tells me what he can and will do.

And THAT is why I support Joe Biden.

10. Obama's my 2nd choice now.
I like him. I think Joe and Obama have the same way of thinking, but Joe has 35 years of experience, wisdom, and contacts, and he's better at laying out specifics on the most current issues more than Obama. Two cents.

13. It's very easy to support and promote Joe IF...
if you've had a chance to know anything about him. Any votes Biden gets are going to be through direct campaigning and word-of-mouth endorsements. Most of America will never know enough about the guy to consider him. The MSM has basically blacklisted him from exposure and the other candidates use his points as their own. America is really going to lose out (again) when we are stuck with a "top-three" Dem vs. a "top-three" repub. If Biden got a measly FOURTH of the covereage that Hillary gets, he'd be a shoo-in.

26. You know....
If I'm not mistaken, I think there is a rule here about picking on someone's typo's/spelling errors. Not to mention that it was a petty remark.

20. I like Biden, but I have never seen a satisfactory explanation as to why he got behind bankruptcy
reform legislation. That is a big negative for me.

22. Because *every* candidate has made stupid decisions and stupid votes
As someone who wasn't totally against the war, I can relate. Joe is too good on too many issues to justify throwing him out as a candidate, imo.

24. Well here is my standard response...
I use it so often, that I have it saved. It's all factual, but you can make up your own mind.

As I have posted many, many, times on this board, Joe voted for the BK bill, for women and children. Under the old BK laws, divorced women with children were the last ones to be paid, if the deadbeat dad filed a BK. Now, they are the first ones to be paid. If you ever question why Joe votes for anything, go look at the floor statements on his website. They will clearly give you an idea of where his interest were. Not in some bank, as has been previously speculated on. There's just no denying that Joe has stood up for women's rights, in a big way. As in the violence against women act, and now, the International violence against women act. But, no "bill" will ever work for all people. There are a lot of people who respect the revisions of the 2005 BK bill. I am one of them.

My best friend is about to reap the rewards of this bill. Her X has just filed a BK, after leaving her without ANY child support, for 2 children, 8 & 6, for 4 years, and just on Thursday of last week, thought that he could get out of paying her by filing a BK. Well, it's people like him that will not be able to get away with it now. He claimed to have lost his 135K yr. job, and had protested ANY request for documentation for his current financial status. Her attorney called for deposition, forcing discovery. Then came back and filed a BK. I know for a fact that he hid money, and that he is also still working, under the table. Under the new law, he will be fully investigated by the courts.

A Senator sometimes has to vote for a bad bill, if there is something in it they truly want. I believe that was Joe's dilemma on the BK bill. But you can look for yourself, and see his financial contributions from banks from 1998, and it's not very impressive.

27. Well,
I've never met anyone with whom I haven't disagreed on something. If that weren't true, bobble heads would only bobble in one direction. I hear that this is a big issue for you. Notwithstanding the fact that 1Corona4u has been patient as a midwife in teaching this story, and you may well understand her points perfectly, you remain dissatisfied with Joe's call on that play. I'm alright with that. I disagree with the ref's all the time. Why don't we just agree that it COULD have been just what Corona describes. A "judgment call," made on a play on the field. I see no reason to impugn the call with improper motive, such as many who feel strongly about Joe's vote are wont to do. Joe is a good man, and there frankly very seem few of his calls on the field that are called into question. Isn't it somewhat unlikely that this, too, is anything but just a judgment call? Regardless of how strongly you disagree with Joe's vote on the bankruptcy bill, I doubt very seriously that you are a single issue supporter/voter. Dems and progressives are characteristically sentient beings, aware of more than their nose. I'll give you the benefit of that doubt if you'll give Joe the benefit of your consciousness.

And I know you haven't raised this additional point in your post here, but just because Joe represents Delaware (which is admittedly corporate friendly, perhaps in the extreme)in the US Senate, does not make him responsible in ANY WAY for Delaware law which is the child of the state legislatures, present and past (all the way back to the 18th century, I might add). But Joe Biden is elected by a Delaware constituency, and it would be disingenuous to demand that he ignore the interests of his constituency or the laws of the state he represents in the Senate.

Thank you for permitting me the opportunity to express these views.
