Challenge to the Biden Bunch! Tell DU all about your guy!
With the caucuses looming, I think it is time to refresh everyone's memory about the various candidates in a positive fashion.

So I ask Biden supporters to post the various accomplishments, stances & campaign platforms that make their candidate the guy to vote for.

Please save sniping at other candidates and/or their supporters for another thread. There are dozens of them in GDP for you to choose from.

We did these a couple of months ago and I think they went quite well. Let's try to repeat that.

After that, everyday I will post a thread for one of the candidates. I am going to go by alphabetical order (last name) so my thread tomorrow will be for my fellow Hillary supporters.

Dennis got the 1st crack because he was robbed from participating in the last Iowa debate.

Here is the previous thread

1. Thanks rinsd for doing this again
1-Biden has the best foreign policy experience of any candidate and could step into the Oval Office on day one and start to mend the many broken fences created world wide by this administration.

2-Biden has the respect and admiration of his peers on both sides of the aisle. He is more capable of getting legislation through congress than his opponents.

3-Biden has taken on the issues against all odds numerous times, such as intervention in Bosnia and the Violence Against Women Act.

4-Biden has a profound understanding of the Constitution and the law. He teaches constitutional law on weekends.

5-Biden is not beholden to any special interest groups and as he said recently, "no special interest group can count on me."

When Joe Biden speaks, he does not talk in sound-bites. He has informed and sound answers to every question that is directed his way. Years of experience and sound judgment make him my first choice for president.

2. Agree. It was a recent debate, the one when Clinton did not
do so well, when he raised the question of Pakistan, before the recent events.

He certainly understand foreign policy - and, really, we cannot put a candidate who cannot - stayed away from attacking others and, surprise, has learned to speak in short, concise sentences.

During that debate, when everyone was attacking Clinton about her stand on driver's license to illegals, he was the only one who appeared presidential.

8. My reasons?
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 02:37 PM by 1corona4u
Biden is omnipresent.

He's constantly aware with what is going on in the country, and the world for that matter.

He's honest, thoughtful, and considerate.

He's got the only real plan for Iraq, and yes, I do think it will work.

He knows all of the world leaders, and they trust him. This would imediately expedite the repiar to our credibility in the world. World leaders trust him, and they would tell their people to trust him as well.

He's one who finds solutions, and truly has people's best interest in mind.

He's got the best plan for health care. 4 steps to it, not BAM, in your face forced health care.

He's forthright, both in action, and word.

He has the ability to work across the aisle, and has probably more republican support than other candidates.(many will vote for him as well)

(I have more, but am on the run today, so more later)

7. Biden's passion and devotion to this country and our people is evidenced whenever
he speaks.

From this man, not only do I get a feeling of security that we'd be in good hands as a result of his vast experience and relationships with world leaders, I also get a sense of excitement that we CAN heal our country and become the America we all believe in.

When I see him speak, there is no doubt that he is telling us the truth, and not filtering what he says through "campaign-speak". I YEARN for that honesty and respect from my president - an indication that we'd be working TOGETHER, rather than being helpless and just repeatedly being blindsided by the next outrage.

His accomplishments are well known, his respect both in Washington and around the world, and his commitment to our troops, our country, our future is beyond question.

In a GE debate, he'd pulverize the Rep candidate, which not only would be a pleasure to watch, :7, but I also think would serve to help undecideds realize he's the one we need as President right NOW.

Thanks for doing this again!

9. Biden - Part 1
Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 03:01 PM by Steely_Dan
I would like to post additional comments between projects that I am working on.

Here is something that I think we should consider.

An earlier post in this thread stated that Biden would draw some Republican support...sort of the "everyman" candidate.

The last seven years have divided us in ways that we have not seen since Viet Nam. Sometimes the divide seems like an abyss that no bridge can span. It is my belief that Bush has forced his supporters to take unreasonable positions. How many times have we said...that RW nut job is not living in the reality based world. While I believe that there are truly RW nut jobs out there, I also believe that many people on the right were almost "forced" to support Bush. Once they gave their allegiance, it became impossible to admit that they were wrong (the remaining 28% are still there). In the final analysis, many Republicans are not unreasonable people, they are just caught in the web of supporting their party and their President. I think that many are just looking for a way out.

What does this have to do with Biden? One word: "Leadership"

For me, Biden is the perfect candidate to bridge that abyss. He understands politics and government in ways that only 35 years in the Senate can obtain. With the right President, we may find that our differences are not so great. Does this mean we're all going to hold hands and sing each other's praises...of course not. But Biden has this ability to bring resources together for the common good. He has done it countless times in his tenure. He also understands that NOTHING can get done without including everyone. Because of this, I believe he has the ability to strike the perfect balance between being tough on the Right while bringing them back into the fold of reason.

More to come.

I hope that this makes sense...I'm not thinking very clearly right now.

-Paige

Joe Biden: 'a pragmatist rich with experience'

"If campaign money had poured in and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden was nipping at their heels, his fellow Democratic presidential candidates might have been less willing to agree with him. But in recent debates, particularly when questions on foreign policy and the world's trouble spots came up, one rival after another said, in some form, "Joe's right." It happened so often that "Joe's right" became the heart of a Biden campaign ad. Who in their right mind would support this Joe's 'LieBerman' Foreign policy?

Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd voted against the Kyl/LieBerman bill. Senator Barack Obama said he would have voted against it if he had voted. Former Senator John Edwards implied he would have voted against it if he could vote.

much like I do a couple of the candidates now. But After a few years, I grew to appreciate him.(not likely to happen with the two I hate now though...)

I made more during his time in office than I ever have in my life, and things looked pretty damn good. I have said many times, when republicans attack Bill Clinton, that I would rather be hearing about Bill getting a blow job, as opposed to the shit we have had to endure over the last 7. Hey, at least he was still working while getting it, unlike Bush, who will leave office no doubt, the most vacationed president ever.

27. Yeah, and it's kind of funny, but
I was watching Dan Abrams, and he was talking about the kind of people, specifically men, who usually get the presidency, and historically, they have been tall, and good looking....I'd have to do some research on that, albeit a shallow reason to vote for someone, but there may be something to it.

I'd say Obama is the tallest right now, probably Joe second, Dodd 3rd, and Edwards last. I'm going to check it out.

Obama is 6'1", and him and Joe are very close, and suprisingly, I think Bill Richardson is taller than both of them...which is odd, because he seems so short on TV...but he's taller than Joe, standing right next to him. so, if Kooch is 5'7", Joe is way over that..John Edwards is 5'10"...can't find Joes, but I'd guess him dead on at 6'.....oh well..

Edited on Tue Dec-18-07 04:33 PM by 1corona4u
Civil unions ok; gay marriage is probably inevitable
Q: In November 2003, you were asked, "Do you believe gay marriage is inevitable?" And you responded, "I'm not sure. I think probably it is."
A: Well, I think it probably is because social mores change. But I don't think the government can dictate the definition of marriage to religious institutions. But government does have an obligation to guarantee that every individual is free of discrimination. And there's a distinction. I think government should not be able to dictate to religions the definition of marriage, but on a civil side, government has the obligation to strip away every vestige of discrimination as to what individuals are able to do in terms of their personal conduct.

So New Hampshire coming out in favor of civil unions is OK by you?

A: Yes. Yes, it is.

Ending Discrimination Based On Sexual Orientation: Joe Biden believes legal recognition should not be denied same-sex couples. He advocates for re-examining federal laws, including the tax code, to ensure our national laws are not unfair to same-sex couples, and that committed adults who are adopting are not discriminated against because of sexual orientation. He supports letting states determine how to recognize civil unions and define marriage.

Ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: Joe Biden supports ending the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Policy. Twenty-four of the nations serving alongside U.S. forces in Iraq permit open service, and it has no negative impact on their forces or the morale of the soldiers. Joe Biden believes turning away patriotic Americans who volunteer to serve solely because of their sexual orientation is wrong.

And on energy, you can read here;

http://www.joebiden.com/issues/?id=0007

And, by the way, Joe Biden has been the ONLY one so far, to issue a statement about Huckabee's despicable comments;

”Governor Huckabee’s comments on quarantining Americans with AIDS and his targeting of the LGBT community are not only intolerant they’re also ignorant. They perpetuate harmful myths that have no basis in fact. It is important to remember that his remarks came after we passed the Ryan White CARE Act into law and long after the scientific community had reached consensus that HIV/AIDS is not spread through casual contact. Even more telling, Governor Huckabee had the opportunity to recant his comments and chose not to do so.

”I urge all candidates for president, especially the Republicans debating today in Iowa, to stand in unison and reject this sort of hateful rhetoric. The American people are looking for leadership as well as good judgment. Governor Huckabee’s offensive and narrow-minded scapegoating of Americans with AIDS and the LGBT community is not an example of sound judgment that we expect from someone who aspires to unite and represent all Americans.”

37. What Joe Biden means to me...
Having grown up during the same period of time as Joe, I find that we retained some of the same values of the period. Strong family ties, unquestionable respect for parents and grandparents, love of country, honesty, strong work ethic and the desire to maintain a good reputation among friends and co-workers.

I don't know how our parents, teachers and ministers did it, but those values were so instilled in our minds, they became automatic. I see all of them in Joe in the way he has lived his life, performed his duties as U.S. Senator, cared for and protected family members and for his strong feelings about this wonderful country and the Constitution.

You may not think these things are out of the ordinary, but after watching our present administration work their wonders over the past 7 years, Joe's qualities stand out like fireworks on the 4th of July. An easy way to check out my theory is to replace the name Joe Biden with the name George W. Bush and see if the above characteristics fit.

With 35 years of experience in Washington, D.C. under his belt, we are fortunate that Joe has the stamina and desire to even want to attack the massive and messy job of putting this country back together again. My goodness! I can't even imagine how hard that task will be. I truly believe Joe will be able to get the two sides of the aisle working together. The Republicans should be ashamed of the way they allowed everything to deteriorate and be more than willing to cooperate, but we know that isn't going to happen. I think Joe will be able to convince them they owe it to our country to put their shoulders to the wheel and help pull us out of this massive abyss GWB put us into.

I can see the world rise up in gratitude for a Joe Biden presidency. We owe it to them after the hell they have been thru with this cabal in charge. They know Joe, they can interact with Joe, they can talk with Joe. I think that is one quality that I am the most excited about...Joe's ability to listen to and speak on an equal level with world leaders.

Go, Joe!

39. I support Joe Biden because he is rational. And because he is a principled pragmatist. And
Edited on Wed Dec-19-07 01:40 AM by The Village Idiot
because he is a humble man who knows suffering.

Joe Biden is passionate, but he is not an ideologue.

He has demonstrated a commitment to action. His RECORD speaks to his determination to effect values which our nation holds dear.

The following excerpts from Joe Biden's record speak powerfully to me. Perhaps they will speak to others, as well.

- PROTECT THE OPPRESSED (an unapproachable record on civil rights; authored Violence Against Women Act; a leader in the effort to end
the genocide in the Balkans and in Darfur)

- DARFUR (Biden's Plan for Darfur, now before the Senate in S. Res. 276,would make it U.S. policy to stop the violence by deploying
a robust international peacekeeping force, ensure access for humanitarian workers and negotiate a durable political settlement)

- IRAQ (Biden Exit Plan, now having passed both houses and before the executive, calling for a decentralized federal system)

- EDUCATE THE NATION (Biden Education Plan: move to a sixteen year system; focus on retaining & training teachers; reduce class size)

- FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING (leading the effort to pass the Global Warming Pollution Reduction Act; supports the Clean Power Act; as
chairman of the SFRC, wrote a bipartisan resolution directing the President to return to international negotiations and reclaim a
leadership role in the fight against global warming)

- PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT (wrote Biden Debt for Nature plan to give debt relief to developing nations who protect rain forests and
other environmental assets; supports polluter pays superfund; wants permanent protection for ANWR; fights efforts to rollback
environmental safeguards)

- FIND ENERGY INDEPENDENCE (wrote flexfuel vehicle legislation, wrote legislation raising renewable fuel standard benchmarks)

- LOCAL SECURITY (authored Biden Crime Bill, adding 100,000 cops to America's streets; authored the Adam Walsh Act to assure
convicted sex offenders do not slip through the cracks to re-offend against our children; wrote legislation providing funds to
states for building prisons if they agree to keep their violent offenders behind bars for at least 85 percent of their sentence;
authored the Second Chance Act to provide ex-offenders with with housing, drug and alcohol treatment, job training, and other life
skills, providing them with the skills they need to rejoin their families and communities).

- NATIONAL SECURITY (a proven leader on foreign relations; promotes international realism; authored Biden Iraq Exit Plan; authored
legislation to fight global warming, promote energy independence, and establish rational energy policy)

- HEALTH CARE (Joe Biden’s CARE four step plan toward universal health care: cover all children; access for adults; reinsurance for
catastrophic cases; encouraging prevention and modernization)

- ENERGY (Joe Biden's Energy and Climate Change Security Plan: responsible foreign policy toward Iran; restore US leadership on
climate change; increase fuel efficiency & use of renewable fuels; invest in new energy technology; expand renewable energy;
require efficient energy use by Federal Gov't; encourage efficient private energy use; create green jobs in tomorrow's technology)

Plus, he has a great sense of humor and has been tried through tragedy in his life, and emerged stronger. He has respect across the aisle.

Plus, he is most qualified to handle the mess left by Bush in foreign policy and the Justice Department, as he has been chairmen of both committees.

He is the best debater. And a fantastic orator.

Did I mention smarter? He goes into depth more on any issue more than any candidate, who usually never get into the nitty-gritty realities behind political rhetoric. Biden is straightforward, acknowledges the situation, and says how he can fix them.

Tried my best.

throughout his career, taking (initially) unpopular positions and then convincing others to come around ot supporting those positions. (Iraq federalis, Bosnia, Biden Crime Bill, Violence Against Women Act)

He also wrote the first public financing bill in 1972 (I believe)

43. His knowledge and understanding of ALL the issues we're facing now is
impressive and comforting.

When asked about something that isn't on the top Ask The Candidate list, I sometimes think "uh oh..." but he blows me away not only because he's obviously educated himself on the subject, but has given serious thought how to go about SOLVING it!

I'm also dizzy by the number of bills he co-authors, even during his campaigning. He's devoted to public service, and has proved that over and over again his entire adult life.

46. I have no candidate, in a late primary state, and watching how they handle themselves
This is the first cycle I have held off to do this - and I have to say that Senator Biden has been very impressive.

Quick witted, knowledgable and really thinks on his feet.
I have some policy disagreements, but the way he handles himself is very impressive.
I could vote for him in the general with no qualms at all.

I should also say that his supporters do not have the snarky blindness where, if you have doubts or disagree with a point, they attack you and call you names.
Instead, they clarify and discuss. This is very impressive, and reminds me of the Kerry group.
Biden was a big Kerry supporter last cycle- once when Kerry was on a roll, Joe said "Good job, son."
I thought that was kind of endearing.

I think even moderate GOPers could crossover for him.

Joe is a mensch. His supporters have good reason to be proud.
