California Seeks Millions In Fines Against Blue Shield - 12/14/07

Blue Shield is under fire in California for allegedly violating laws that knocked more than 200 people off of medical coverage. Jesse Russell takes a look:

Californias Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is seeking $12.6 million in fines against Blue Shield. He is accusing the insurance company of violating claims-handling laws 1,262 times. The result of those violations, according to Poizner, has been more than 200 individuals losing medical coverage. This is the first time in California history that the Department of Insurance has taken legal action over cancellation policies. Blue Shield issued a strongly worded statement on Wednesday saying the company is outraged by the excessive penalties for nonsubstansive issues and that the company is being fined for practices that have been approved for years by the department. Blue Shield of California Life and Health covers 167,000 individuals in the state.

1. An old job I had used Blue Shield as their insurer for their medical plan
Twice I had to switch doctors because Blue Shield balked about paying so often that the doctors finally got fed up and would no longer take them. Me hopes they get taken for every penny they're worth. And I'm glad to finally see some prosecution for this kind of thing.

2. I have medicare as my primary
but Blue Cross and Blue Shield as the pick up insurance. But even before I had the medicare, my insurance did not question anything and paid it. I am lucky that the coverage thru my retirement is holding up. I twisted my ankle recently and have a stress fracture. I was given one of those walking boots instead of a cast. The nurse said I had to sign a slip in case the insurance company wouldn't pay. I was kind of worried. Now I am more worried. I know medicare and BC/BS has paid everything before but I am nervous.
