Bill Shaheen quits Clinton campaign
Bill Shaheen quits Clinton campaign

By JOHN DISTASO
Senior Political Reporter

Bill Shaheen has resigned as a co-chair of Hillary Clinton’s national campaign, UnionLeader.com has learned.

Shaheen last night apologized for telling a reporter that if Barack Obama becomes the Democratic presidential nominee, Republicans will use his admitted past drug use against him. Clinton this morning personally apologized to Obama in Shaheen’s remarks. The two candidates reportedly met at Reagan National Airport in Washington.

In a statement first obtained by UnionLeader.com, Shaheen said, “I would like to reiterate that I deeply regret my comments yesterday and say again that they were in no way authorized by Senator Clinton or the Clinton campaign. Senator Clinton has been running a positive campaign focused on the issues that matter to America’s families. She is the best qualified to be the next President of the United States because she can lead starting on day one. I made a mistake and in light of what happened, I have made the personal decision that I will step down as the Co-Chair of the Hillary for President campaign. This election is too important and we must all get back to electing the best qualified candidate who has the record of making change happen in this country. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”

Shaheen had told the Washington Post, “The Republicans are not going to give up without a fight, and one of the things they’re certainly going to jump on is his drug use.”

1. The Clinton Campaign is Going Off The Rails on a Crazy Train
This is truly horrible timing for the campaign, and really not the kind of headlines they want just a few weeks before the primary.

Bill Shaheen is very, very well known by New Hampshire Dems and this resignation will reverberate for some time to come.

2. He just said something everyone already knew would happen
The Repugs have a long history of using the lowest forms of discourse in getting their way.

9. I thought the same thing when I read Obama's book months ago.
He's a good man and wouldn't deserve the rap, but knowing these repubs as I do, I wouldn't put it past them.

HRC's campaign ought to know better, though! This whole thing just "gets it out there" that Obama took some drugs when he was young, to people who don't have the whole story or did not read his "Audacity of Hope" as I did. I truly hope that was not the "real" reason this whole thing ended up the way it did!

7. Very republican stance
Throw a pile of shit--if it sticks, move on to business as usual.
If it creates a shitstorm--then have someone resign, move on to business as usual.

I expect better from our side of the aisle.

But,once a republican, always a republican. Hillary has run an almost flawless campaign and I guarantee NOTHING is done without her implicit consent.

BTW, where is Rove these days?

10. I thought this would be overtaken by the debate and disappear
but I guess the debate will just be a short blip in the middle of this story.
