2nd Clinton worker sent Obama-is-Muslim e-mail

December 10, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign on Sunday requested the resignation of a second Iowa volunteer coordinator who forwarded a hoax e-mail saying Barack Obama is a Muslim possibly intent on destroying the United States.

1. Horrible...
But it can't reasonably be blamed on Hillary or her campaign at large. It was a volunteer in Iowa who wasn't there to do a serious and honest job. I'm glad Hillary's campaign at least handled it decisively and quickly.

5. Shoot the messenger
Horrors! A dupe post! This is far worse than spreading scurrilous rumors about a candidate!

6. It is horrible. And racism is horrible also
Has any one even considered the possibity that at least a few of Clinton's volunteers may have personally decided to throw in their lot with Clinton BECAUSE they do not want Obama to become President, and Clinton has always had the best chance of stopping him from becoming the Democratic nominee? If so than their personal agenda all along may have been more about stopping Obama than loving Clinton. It is hard to screen out people for having the wrong motivation until specific evidence emerges.

When it comes to discussing possible Stop Clinton alliances here on DU no one finds that odd. We talk about all kinds of scenarios under which voters might, or even "should", throw their support to one Democratic candidate or another in a calculated move mostly intended to stop Clinton from winning. If some one really has it in for Obama and is worried about him winning the Democratic nomination than working for Clinton is one tactic s/he may embrace. If so than Clinton unfortunately inherits their racist baggage along with their contributions until that comes to light.

12. Another way to look at it is the victory--above-all culture
of her campaign filters down to the troops and they start doing things that cross the line. This doesn't mean that the Clinton campaign is encouraging it, but the environment might be a contributing factor.

I don't think Clinton has run a particularly negative campaign, even including the recent clumsy spate of attacks. However, she did kick this whole thing off with the statement that she's "in it to win it," and the narrative of her campaign also fails to place anything high-minded in the forefront (experience and ready-to-lead being devoid of inspirational value). Much has also been stated about her ability to get down-and-dirty with those nasty Republicans, tear 'em a new asshole and all that. Campaigns have their own culture and their own way of inspiring behaviors at the ground level. If anything goes in the service of victory, why not this?

13. I wouldn't rule it out.
Different things make people tick, and how they then tick differs also. It's not like FBI psychological profiles are required from volunteers before they are given roles with some responsibility in a campaign. A committment to playing hard to win can be a double edged sword. It's like in sports how football oaches want their players to "give it 110%" and always make hard tackles on the field. Whether players give it their all or not can make the difference between winning and losing, and none of us think that losing in politics is a sensible goal. But fired up players sometimes make dirty hits also, and draw serious fouls and suspensions. Just because a coach wants his players to make hard hits doesn't mean he wants them to literally attempt to give a Quarterback a concussion.

8. I got an e-mail about 6 months ago (not from Clinton)
called "Who is Barack Obama?" It went on to claim that he is a radical Muslim intent on destroying the U.S. if he is elected president. I vaguely know the guy who sent it, and he knew that I liked Obama. WOW! I'm sure glad he straightened me out! :sarcasm:

11. Did Clinton know about this like Obama knew about McCulkrin's bigotry?
Answer: no. Clinton did not know and took swift action. Obama made different choices. He consciously chose to use bigotry to win votes.
