Living in Arizona - I have alot of positive things to say about Mormons.
This is Mormon country you know! Maybe 2nd to Utah.

Throughout the years I have made friends with many people of the Mormon faith.

The one thing that impresses me the most about them, is how they take care of each other.
Yeah - I know - that could really suck in politics - but listen to this.....

I knew one woman from work. She worked part-time, her husband was in construction. They had NO medical insurance.
When she was pregnant, the church paid for her to go to the doctor every month for her checkups - and they paid for
her hospital stay when the baby was born.

You gotta admit, that is pretty amazing.

Yeah - they wear funny underwear, and have their own way of looking at things, but the majority of Mormons I have met are usually the kindest, most caring people that I have met.

I just thought you should know that :)

1. Of course there are good Mormons. And good Catholics. And good
Jews. And good Protestants. And good Lutherans. And good Baptists. And on and on and on.

What does that tell you about this place that this has to be said?????

3. Just what I have been hearing on the news, from late nite comics, and here - people talk about
Mormons like they belong to some weird cult.

I have never thought that way about them.

9. Some of their practices are weird. So are everyone elses to someone.
The thing I find I dislike about Mormons is their total ability to ignore the fact that they're as corrupt and hypocritical as the worst members of any religion.

Do people not know that Mormons were some of the original backers of the gambling mecca Las Vegas? Of course their treatment of women (by a minority) is bullshit. But they are no better/worse than anyone, including non-believers.

10. They wear these undershirts that are blessed or something!
One of my dearest friends where I worked was Mormon. She was very, very heavy.
And Arizona is very, very hot. But no matter what - she always had to have her special undershirt on :P

20. Mormons have "sacred" underwear.
Officially, they're called "temple garments" and a Mormon first receives this clothing when they enter the temple for the first time. Apparently the garments are a symbolic replacement for the fig leaves worn by Adam & Eve, and you never remove them unless you're in the shower, or having sex with your spouse.

For such "holy" garments they're actually very plain looking. No, I'm not LDS, but I did have the occasion to see the garments in person before.

I'm from Michigan and have worked with a couple of Mormons. They were super-nice people. I have nothing against Mittens because of his religion. I do remember when his Daddy was our Governor. It was a typical Rethug administration and not good for MI.

Religion should not be a factor, though if another Faux Christian was in the running I certainly would oppose them based on religion alone. That's something BushCo taught me. Rethugs should be worrying more bout Huckabee.

6. I have worked with several Mormons and they were very nice.
Their children are well behaved. The girls wore what I call a Christian Burqa but still looked nice. I do not agree with them having so many children but they all were financially able to take care of them. Now for the bad news. I would not vote for a Mormon to be President of the US. Why, because a persons religion will definitely effect the laws they will pass.

7. Mormons are like anyone
Some are kind, some are assholes, some drink Coke and Pepsi, even. In college I had a Mormon GF. We had sex. She didn't feel guilty. She didn't wear holy underwear either - she wore boyshorts. And this was the early 90's.

I get the feeling that most people who are religous pay lip service to their church being 'the' authority. Deep down, they know it isn't.

In fact, I would argue that most Americans - a great deal of them at least - don't really believe in their religion, when push comes to shove. I think underneath all of the faithful's faith, they adhere more to the social contract in the end.

19. the rates are high because domestic violence is taken seriously
I suspect that Mississippi has domestic violence far higher than its published statistics, but the attitude of those idiot religious conservatives that dominate the state is that domestic violence is between the man and the woman, and the woman should shut up and take it. Heck, the state had legislators that want to bring back corporal punishment in schools and prisons; they probably think smacking your wife around is a good thing, not a crime.

Always be careful what's behind the statistics, not merely look at the statistics themselves.

29. I hate to tell you this but Utah is more conservative than Mississippi
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 10:10 PM by Quixote1818
What makes their "idiot religious conservatives" any more pure than those in Mississippi? Bush won 71% of the vote in Utah. He only got 60% in Mississippi.

Nice try but your argument simply falls flat.

2004 Presidential Vote:

Utah

Bush Winner Rep 612,623 71
Kerry Dem 227,286 26

Mississippi

Bush Winner Rep 671,084 60
Kerry Dem 445,608 40

22. If you lived under their thumb in UT you wouldn't be so impressed.
I have noticed a HUGE difference between dyed-in-the-wool Utah Mormons and those who live (and have always lived) in more liberal states.

Patriarchy is the name of their game, and they enthusiastically support anything that smacks of theocracy.

33. I lived in UT when I was a teenager for 3 years (dad was USAF). Also,
I have lots of family there and NV, and my dad was raised in a "jack" Mormon family.

If you lived in Salt Lake City and in more recent years, you probably would not be as aware of the problem. But we lived in a suburb of Ogden and the Mormon influence was pervasive and oppressive. It could have been worse, though. I had a Jewish classmate and a black classmate, and they were the only Jew and black within 30 miles, I suspect - they did NOT have a quality experience in UT.

26. Lived in Rexburg, ID for four years (110% Mormon)
Edited on Fri Dec-07-07 08:45 PM by loindelrio
Lived in SW Missouri, including Springfield, for several years in the 80's (Ashcroftvania).

For myself, I would rather live among the 'Magic Underwear' crowd versus the 'Jaysus has blessed me because I'm rich (or will be someday)' crowd anyday.

Yea, the Mormons have some wacky beliefs, but they just seemed to be more honest, more authentic. The Assembly of God/Baptist Nascar/Country Music complex just seemed, along with the people, phony.

Was taking a CAD course at Ricks College one winter (Mormon 2 yr. college), and saw a syllabus on one of the courses. It concerned 'advertising resistance' and quite frankly seemed to address a lot of the anti-consumerism views expressed by many DU'ers. I can't imagine an AG/Baptist college questioning the God given right to consume.

If I have a choice of fundies, I'll take the ones whose church has two 'levels' of marriage and where the womenfolk can do truly amazing things with Jello.

28. "the church paid for her ..."
Mormons are obligated to send 10% of their yearly earnings to the church. So the church is paying back some of the money that this family gave to the church. This is how Mormons were able to build such lavish churches. Mormons are a Cult. Look up the definition.

The Jack Mormons are fine but the hard core Mormons are absolutely NUTS!!! They constantly try to convert you and they pump out kids like CRAZY!!!! I have an aunt who wanted to live to her next birthday just so she could vote for Bush who she absolutely LOVED!!!! I love some of my Mormon family but many of them are right out of the movie Deliverance!!!

When you consider that Bush won 71% of the vote in Utah and he only got 60% in Mississippi, that should be one hell of an eye opener of how nuts they are!

31. Who would be president, Romney or the leader of the LDS?
I 'd have to say Romney would be in charge. Once you decided that, the fact that he is a member of the LDS is beside the point. The real question is, what are his views and how would he govern?

Those questions are as mysterious as the wear abouts of Jimmy Hoffa. I don't even know if Romney knows what his real views are. They think Kerry was a flip flopper? Romney makes Kerry look like an armature flip flopper.
