Taking Spin Out of Report That Made Bad Into Good Health

By ROBERT PEAR

Published: February 22, 2004

WASHINGTON, Feb. 21 — The Bush administration says it improperly altered a report documenting large racial and ethnic disparities in health care, but it will soon publish the full, unexpurgated document.

"There was a mistake made," Tommy G. Thompson, the secretary of health and human services, told Congress last week. "It's going to be rectified."

Mr. Thompson said that "some individuals took it upon themselves" to make the report sound more positive than was justified by the data.

The reversal comes in response to concerns of Democrats and the Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, Republican of Tennessee. They are pushing separate bills to improve care for members of minorities.

1. Lie or Error
Is this an out and out, news worthy lie, or just a mistake?

I don't think this is worth much.

3. The Bush administration is both incompetent and dishonest
So yes, it is frequently difficult to discern when they are being incompetent and when they are liars.

6. Did you even read the whole article?
The report was altered. Some entries in statistical tables were deleted. Facts were manipulated to fit political goals.

This is not a one time occurrence for the Bush admin. They do this repeatedly and often. They are LIARS, they LIE. It's their nature.

YES! IT'S news worthy. Of course it is. You are just not used to hearing about it. Rush Limpdick won't be mentioning it on his program, inless he whines about this stupid prick being picked on for being caught in another lie.

But then why take the word of an addict that traffics large mass quantities of Oxycontin and then blames it on back pain and a conspiracy to get him. :eyes:

11. Well, you bring up an interesting point I had not considered
I had only considered that they were incompentent and liars. Now that you mention it, they are incompetent AT lying. :)

2. "some individuals took it upon themselves"
to make the report sound more positive.

Doesn't sound like a "mistake". It sounds like they purposely tried to mislead.

4. They probably know that it's against the rules
to tell W anything other than good news. It wouldn't surprise me if some of them thought they'd be in trouble for giving the naked emperor bad news.

Of course, it could be that the whole lot of them are deceitful lying bastards.

9. It actually is worse than just the typical Bush lies.
Turd Blossom Rove now supervises the actions of nearly every Department and Agency of the federal government. I am confident that he is responsible for the political editing of this report. Rove also routinely gives political seminars, including polling data to supervisors at different agencies to instruct them on how they can alter the results of their work to benefit Bush and the republican party.
Though Mr. Rove's clout within the administration often is celebrated, this episode offers a rare window into how he works behind the scenes to get things done. One of them is with periodic visits to cabinet departments. Over the past two years Mr. Rove or his top aide, Kenneth Mehlman -- now manager of Mr. Bush's re-election campaign -- have visited nearly every agency to outline White House campaign priorities, review polling data and, on occasion, call attention to tight House, Senate and gubernatorial races that could be affected by regulatory action.

14. It is Rove's stated devotion to the principle of Machiavelli,
that have allowed him to elbow his way into arguably the third most powerful position in the country.

13. This may not be a rational thought, but I think
everything that comes from Chimpy's and the administration's mouths are lies. They simply cannot tell the truth. Their heads would explode if they did.
