Amalgamated Transit Union Endorses Clinton

he Clinton Campaign today announced the endorsement of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU). The ATU is the largest union of transit workers in North America and represents more than 180,000 members employed in the transit, school bus, intercity bus, paratransit and emergency medical transportation industries, as well as other clerical personnel and municipal employees.

"Hillary Clinton has the strength and experience to deliver the change that America’s working families need," said International President Warren S. George. "She has a deep commitment to rebuilding the middle class and addressing the pocketbook issues that most matter to our members."

George said Clinton was the clear choice of ATU members, due to her strong record supporting working families and her detailed plans to rebuild the nation’s infrastructure and promote economic fairness.

"I am honored to receive the support of the men and women of the Amalgamated Transit Union," Clinton said. "When I’m President, America’s working families will again have an advocate in the White House."

Clinton has received strong support from major unions representing nearly 4 million working families nationwide. Her endorsements include the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union; International Associations of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; Transportation Communications Union; National Association of Letter Carriers; International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers; American Federation of Teachers; the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; and the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers.

2. Looking at that list of labor endorsers
will reveal that most of them are among the more conservative unions in the U.S. The unions listed have a tendency simply to endorse whoever they perceive as being the Democratic frontrunner. The political cowardice and myopia of organized labor's misleaders in 21st-century America is nothing short of embarrassing. Many of those dinosaurs have learned nothing from the last 30 years, and they are doing their membership no favors. Hopefully the more militant rank-and-file organizations can take control of these unions like TDU did with the Teamsters back in 95, but avoid the same errors.

14. Do you have any proof whatsoever that any
of these unions are "conservative" or "have a tendency to endorse whoever is the front runner". Nice anti-union screed you got going there.

4. That's an overly broad statement...I'm a union member and I don't support her
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 03:23 PM by Spirit of 34
I know plenty of other union members, activists, organizers, officers who don't support her either, and plenty of non-union workers too. And I'm pretty sure she's not the first choice of "working people" in Iraq or Palestine either-- I don't see her looking out for their interests.

You can't judge what "working people" think on the basis of endorsements from some conservative unions. Often the leaders of these unions don't even accurately represent their own rank-and-file, much less the working-class as a whole.

5. Not it's not, and so what if you don't support her?
I never said EVERY working person supports her. You're just looking to piss on the thread.

9. Maybe you should have said "some working people support Hillary" then
That would clarify matters.

And seems common for people here to equate criticism of their candidate with "pissing on a thread", so I take no offense.

10. Why?
Why is ATU a good endorsement? Just b/c it's another union endorsing her? Or is there something particular about ATU you think makes it a good endorsement?
