In Iowa, Mormon Issue Is Benefiting Huckabee
NYT: In Iowa, Mormon Issue Is Benefiting Huckabee
By MICHAEL LUO
Published: November 28, 2007

The religious divide over Mitt Romneys Mormon faith that his supporters had long feared would occur is emerging in Iowa as he is being challenged in state polls by Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist pastor who has played up his faith in his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

Mr. Huckabees rise in Iowa some recent polls now put him in a dead heat with Mr. Romney, who had led surveys for months has been fueled by evangelical Christians, who believe Mormonism runs counter to Christian orthodoxy.

Although Mr. Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, has been able to make inroads among the evangelicals, an influential voting bloc in the state, interviews with Mr. Huckabees supporters make clear that a sizable number are distinctly uncomfortable with Mr. Romneys religion and cite it as a major reason they would not vote for him in the states Jan. 3 caucuses.

On Monday, Mr. Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, raised the stakes when he began broadcasting an advertisement in Iowa that emphasizes his faith and declares him to be a Christian leader all in capital letters which some might view as a shot at Mr. Romney....

2. Interesting given what just happened in Kentucky's election
The fundies pulled out all the stops and most Repubs still got their asses kicked at the polls. The tactic is loosing steam, thank god~!

3. Contrary to what the media has been saying.....
Evangelicals will NEVER vote for Romney because he is Mormon and they will never vote for Guilani because they don't trust that he is really pro-life. I go to church with these people every Sunday and I have listened to them talk about it. We once has a three week bible study that was devoted to picking apart the Mormon's and how they are nothing but a "cult".

5. It's all getting very nasty VERY early...
People are already getting very sick of hearing nothing but negative. I think this benefits Huckabee on their side. I have no idea who it benefits on "ours". I hope our side can rise above it, I really do.
