Novak: Agents of Hillary claim 'scandalous information' on Obama; decided not to use it...

Hillary vs. Obama
by Robert Novak

Posted: 11/17/2007

Agents of Sen. Hillary Clinton are spreading the word in Democratic circles that she has scandalous information about her principal opponent for the party's presidential nomination, Sen. Barack Obama, but has decided not to use it. The nature of the alleged scandal was not disclosed.

This word-of-mouth among Democrats makes Obama look vulnerable and Clinton look prudent. It comes during a dip for the front-running Clinton after she refused to take a stand on New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's now discarded plan to give driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

Experienced Democratic political operatives believe Clinton wants to avoid a repetition of 2004, when attacks on each other by presidential candidates Howard Dean and Richard Gephardt were mutually destructive and facilitated John Kerry's nomination.

I also see anti-hillary types ripping her to shreds and then whining when hillary supporters stick up for her or do the same to their candidate. it's unbelievable.

35. I do think a call for caution was warranted here as
Novack is not a good guy. It's not just the anti Hillary people going to RW sites. Many of the Hillary 44 stories are right wing sourced.

Here, the question will be if peopel more legit than Novack say they were told this appear. If not, it likely isn't true. (The other possibility is that it is Clinton supporters run amok - like whoever does Hillary 44.

Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 11:21 AM by AtomicKitten
but if this rumor is being floated by the HRC camp, it is the most insidious of cheese with the insinuation they've got "the dirt" and then trying to claim the high ground by not naming it specifically.

This is precisely what they tried to do to John Kerry in 2004 with the allegation that he was having an affair. I recall Wes Clark saying at a rally that something big was going to come out and take down the Kerry campaign.

It's an insidiously disgusting propaganda campaign.

Rumor: A Kerry Affair & Push Polling

Rumor has it that John Kerry (D) is going to be outed by Time Magazine next week for having an affair with a 20 year old woman who remains unknown. The affair supposedly took place intermittently right up to Kerrys Fall 2002 announcement of candidacy. At present, this is nothing more than a rumor; and after such sordid tactics as the push polling that took place in South Carolina in the 2000 elections, can such rumors be credible during campaign cycles? Could this create a Democratic backlash against Republicans for perceived scandalmongering?

* snip *

It's funny that you are sitting there whining about this rumor has been created by the Republicans. This rumor was created by Wes Clark saying off the record to 12 reporters that Sen Kerry has an intern problem. For anyone who doesn't know, Clark is Clinton's boy. Why would the Clintons benefit from Kerry imploding? I can answer that in one sentenceHillary in 2008. The Clintons for 8 years acted only with there own interests at heart, not there party and certainly not the country. I fail to see why anyone should be surprised at this.

24. Yeah, and the denial resonates.
I would know because I used to be among them.

Oliphant confirmed the rumor-mongering.

http://www.politicalstar.com/john-kerry.html

Wesley Clark Throws Fuel on the Fire

Despite his recent endorsement of Kerry, in an off-the-record conversation with a dozen reporters earlier this week, General Wesley Clark allegedly stated: "Kerry will implode over an intern issue," according to a Drudge story released Thursday.

In a subsequent Boston Globe report, Thomas Oliphant confirms the story saying, "Clark actually said he was still in the race because he thought Kerry's campaign was going to implode over what he inelegantly called an 'intern' scandal."

Talon News is also reporting that Craig Crawford of the Congressional Quarterly said that Chris Lahane, Clark's press secretary and a previous adviser to former Vice President Al Gore, has known about the Kerry affair story for a while and "has shopped around for a long time" to find someone to publish it.

Sources told the Drudge Report - who previously broke the story on Bill Clinton's affair with intern Monica Lewinsky in 1998 - that these allegations are the reason why Dean decided not to drop out of the race after Wisconsin and turned increasingly aggressive against the front-running rival in recent days.

29. Now add it to what Douglas Brinkley said in April 2004 and the picture is CRYSTAL CLEAR.

http://www.depauw.edu/news/index.asp?id=13354

And THIS is what many of us have been trying to make clear to Democrats - we were being undermined the last 8 years from within our own party by a few powerful Dems who did not want a Democrat to win.

The Vanity Fair article that quoted Gore's people made it painfully clear that this has been going on deliberately since 1999.

36. The account in Shrum's book on this was interesting
Edited on Sat Nov-17-07 03:56 PM by karynnj
and showed how different the Kerry campaign was in this fake story vs Clinton with any of his similar stories.

Shrum asked Kerry in private and was told by Kerry that he had been faithful to Teresa. When the campaign people spoke of it, one of Kerry's first reactions was to feel sorry for the girl that her name was being dragged through the tabloids.

I had heard that Clark had repeated the story, but had though the source was more likely Chris Lahayne (sp?) - but even that was only rumor.

The Kerry campaign was alos hit by push polls that said that his cancer had returned.

22. If Hillary's camp is saying this I will happily vote against her.
This is the slimiest thing I have seen. "I know something awful about you but I won't tell you what it is".

Do I believe Hillary etal would do this? YES.

That is why I want them OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT. All of them. I'm tired of everything to do with the Clintons. Sick of the fact that they had 8 years that I feel were squandered.

Sure they caretake ok...but they left us with a hideous health care system, and they could have saved us from global warming if they had a clue. What did they accomplish? A turnaround in the deficit that George Bush was able to completely blow as soon as he got in? What kind of "legacy" is instantly gone?

They BLEW IT. And Bill's stupidity with that moron Monica Lewinsky led directly to George Bush.

I don't care who wins just not Hillary or Bill or Chelsea.

26. Wow, what "news."
"Agents" = unnamed parties, possibly non-existent parties, even.

"Scandalous information" = still no actual facts to report, because if we did have them, you can bet we'd use them (cf. Valerie Plame).

"The nature of the alleged scandal was not disclosed" = we don't know, actually, what we are talking about (if anything).

"Experienced Democratic political operatives believe" = we still aren't naming anyone for the record, and if these "operatives" are real people, we are reporting what they "believe," i.e., opinions, not facts.

Someone tell me why I should take this douchebag seriously, again?

32. "I have in my hand 57 cases of individuals who would appear to be either card-carrying members or...
...certainly loyal to the Communist Party, but who nevertheless are still helping to shape our foreign policy."

That's Joe McCarthy with classic smearing innuendo from February of 1950. At least he had the decency to at least say what he was smearing about.

Joe McCarthy had the decency to stand up in person and smear his enemies, real or imagined; Hillary Clinton has surrogates do it for her.

Joe McCarthy had the decency to specify what calumny his nemeses were guilty of; Hillary Clinton leaves the earth-shattering ugliness to roil in the imaginations of others.

Since she is so "good" (because she repeatedly says she is) we can only conclude that Obama's evil must be of the most scurrilous sort, so it's obvious he's a drug-addicted, kitten-raping, islamist, misogynistic, whitey-hating, murderous, thieving criminal atheist. How dare he show his face in public.

Hillary's deeply and morally ethical not to divulge such heinous FACTS, and does so out of noble self-sacrifice and devotion to the cause of high-tone politickin'.

Even Novak gets it: she'd love to use it, but sees it as politically risky; like everything else in her world, tactical success is the only criterion upon which actions are to be judged. So what's her solution? HAVE IT BOTH WAYS; IT'S THE CLINTON WAY! Break out the whisper brigade, disavow all knowledge, erect an unassailable wall of righteous deniability and fulsome speed ahead!
