Here is an action you can take that actually might -- for once -- make a difference!

The issue of impeaching Bush and/or Cheney was famously taken "off the table" by Nancy Pelosi over a year ago. She made this announcement prior to the 2006 mid-term elections hoping the statement would appease "centrists" and help Democrats win a majority in Congress.

Coincidentally, a 2006 win for Democrats also meant Pelosi was destined to be named the first woman Speaker of the House. So, we are guessing she may have had a bit of self-interest when she made such an untenable promise NOT to carry out her sworn duty to uphold the Constitution.

Pelosi may also be reluctant to initiate impeachment for fear she will be accused of doing so because she is third in line to be President. And right-wing critics are ready to pounce on Pelosi for that very reason. If so, rather than stand in the way of impeachment, she should recuse herself from the decision-making process.

Today “there’s rumors on the Internets” -- here, here and here (and lost of other places) -- that Pelosi will reconsider her no-impeachment stance – IF – she receives 10,000 HAND WRITTEN letters supporting the impeachment of Dick Cheney.

So, if you really want to see Congress – especially the Democrats – start acting like the co-equal branch of Government that they were intended to be – PLEASE write to Pelosi today.

For those of you unaccustomed to the snail mail process, here are 5 easy steps:

1. Find a pen and a piece of paper;
2. Write your letter;
3. Find an envelope and write Pelosi's address on it;
4. Put the letter in the envelop and attach a stamp to it;
5. Put it in a mailbox.

Has there been the slightest verification of this? I don't think so. And I doubt there will be. Because of security concerns,the use of snail mail to contact members of Congress is actively discouraged. The notion that Pelosi would invite a lot of snail mail is pretty absurd on it face.

That's not to say that people shouldn't try to contact Pelosi and/or their own members in Congress via any and all means (email, snail mail, calls). They absolutely should. But the idea that Nancy is conducting a mail in impeachment "constest" is not believable imho.

Although, I completely agree with the idea of impeaching the assholes in the WH, the story from OpEd also suggests that one mail a letter to Cindy Sheehan so that she can verify the count.

Cindy Sheehan is concerned that Pelosi may not accurately count the letters and therefore she is asking that you send them to her instead. We share Cindy’s skepticism but also, as pragmatists, are aware that Pelosi may disregard letters sent to Cindy since she is calling for those letters to be sent to her. Why not write TWO letters and send one of them directly to Pelosi and the other to Sheehan?

I'd hate to see that happen too, as it might cheapen the impeachment effort. Worth considering for sure, however
I've already sent my letters as have many others... most I think to both places, not just to Cindy.

Also, I agree Nancy shouldn't need 10,000 more letters to "get it" about impeachment, but apparently she needs something
more than she's gotten. I'm following up on every thread of hope for keeping the impeachment issue alive and kicking
in House Judiciary, and if that means flooding Pelosi's desk with personal hand-written letters. Why the hell not?

67. Welcome to DU! One thing I learned since the anthrax scare, if you want

to send a - shall we say - unimpeachable letter to her or anyone else in Congress:

Make it SO abundantly clear that your letter poses no threat to anyone. You do that thusly:

1) Follow the rule of putting your return address on it. Anything not traceable back to the sender is automatically suspect.
2) Don't bother with an envelope. Write the letter on an 8x11 piece of paper. Message on one side. Fold it in threes and tape it shut in one spot only, in the middle - leaving both ends open so they can easily be peeked into. That way it's clear that there's nothing evil being smuggled inside that could pose any threat of any sort. Write the address on the outside, put your return address on it, stamp it, and mail it.
3) Along the same lines - send a postcard. There, again, it's very clear, nothing evil is hidden therein. There IS no "in."

I also know of campaigns to send paper plates, properly stamped and addressed, to Mme. Speaker: "Nancy, SET THE TABLE!!! IMPEACHMENT NOW!!!!" The post office will deliver anything that's properly stamped. Something like this would be gimmicky and get lots of attention, generating lots of talk!
