To answer the question, Mr. Burroughs, a soft-spoken, 44-year-old chemist, set aside time this week to see for himself. On Saturday, he saw Hillary Rodham Clinton. On Sunday, he visited Joe Biden. On Monday, he caught John Edwards. And last night, he saw Barack Obama at the Knoxville Skate Pit.
Standing near the edge of this old roller skating rink, he asked Mr. Obama a question.
“Tell me one thing about yourself that makes you the most electable Democrat in the general election,” said Mr. Burroughs, who works at an ethanol plant not far from here.
For Mr. Obama, Knoxville was the end of a two-day, eight-city bus tour. At nearly each stop along the way, he received similar versions of the question posed by Mr. Burroughs.
