Anti-military waste group backs Edwards
Anti-military waste group backs Edwards
By Tony Leys--Des Moines Register
Friday, November 9, 2007

----
Presidential candidate John Edwards has picked up the endorsement of a citizens group known for passing out pie-chart cookies at Democratic and Republican campaign events.

Caucus4Priorities, which says it has 10,000 Iowa members, announced Friday that it would back Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina.

The group wants the federal government to cut spending on military programs that it views as wasteful and use the money on domestic programs. It often hands out cookies and pens with its trademark pie chart showing the huge amount of federal spending that goes to the Pentagon.

The group is headed by Ben Cohen, co-founder of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Co.
“We have lots of friends in this race but only one champion,” he said in a press release Friday morning. "John Edwards is the most committed and best prepared to bring about the kind of real change Washington desperately needs. John Edwards is uniquely qualified to take on Washington lobbyists and defense contractors, and break the stranglehold they have on the nation’s pocketbook and reins of power. Edwards is the fighter in the race and that’s what progressives are yearning for.”

The group said its volunteers attended more than 550 campaign events from various candidates, often asking the candidates where they stood on the issue.
