Ecuador's president on US military bases in Ecuador

U.S. officials say the US military base in Ecuador is "vital for counter-narcotics surveillance operations on Pacific drug-running routes", according to Reuters. And Ecuador's president Rafael Correa has said the US can extend its lease expiring in 2009 for the Manta air base. Correa has one condition however - to do so, Ecuador has to be able to open a military base in the US! Wonderful, I love this new class of people coming into power in Latin America. I wonder what Bush is going to say in response to this one.

I always wondered about this, but the U.S. has so many bases in Latin American countries to fight the drug war, yet, as far as I can tell, it hasn't made any significant, impact whatsoever in reducing drug usage or importing. I wonder how many of these smugglers are actually hindered by the U.S. and how many work for the U.S.?
