To Nancy from Nance - A Word about 'The Words'
Edited on Sun Oct-21-07 09:18 PM by NanceGreggs
TO: The Honorable Nancy Pelosi

RE: Remarks of Rep. Peter Stark (D-CA), October 2007

Dear Madam Speaker:

Let me begin by saying that I am fully appreciative of the fact that our elected representatives are expected to behave in a civil, courteous manner when doing the people’s business, and must be circumspect in choosing their words as a matter of course.

However, I wonder if you appreciate that there comes a time when such courtesy and civility must be pushed to one side to make way for the truth. And if the truth is abhorrent, that is often the circumstance in which it should be spoken – nay, shouted – by those courageous enough to give it a voice.

Although the delivery of Mr. Stark’s statements may be viewed by some as lacking in proper decorum, one cannot debate the fact that he spoke the truth. Soldiers getting their heads blown off in Iraq is not an exaggeration, but a statement of fact. As for that kind of tragedy ‘amusing the president”, we have had ample demonstrations of Mr. Bush’s mirth when it comes to the serious topic of our troops dying.

We have all seen the video of Bush searching for WMDs under his desk, laughing at the fact that they couldn’t be found anywhere – even as our men and women were dying as a result of that very lie. We have seen Mr. Bush chortle and smile smugly as he talks about the casualties; we have heard the disgust of parents who met with him at the White House after losing a child in combat, and the way they were greeted with an arrogant smirk instead of heartfelt condolences for their loss.

While it is always judicious to take into account the feelings of those who take an opposing position on an issue, one should also consider that in a circumstance such as this – dealing with people who are about to keep our poorer children from accessing necessary healthcare – there were no “feelings” to be considered, simply because anyone who would oppose such assistance obviously has no feelings at all.

If I may, Madam Speaker, I would remind you of something you should already know. We, the People, especially Democrats, have had our fill of “niceties” being accorded to the very people who questioned our patriotism when we opposed this war, the draft-dodgers who sent our children to fight, those who never-served who besmirched the reputations of those who did, and did so honorably.

We are tired of courtesy being extended to those who have circumvented our Constitutional rights, corrupted our system of justice, and plundered our treasury to fund an unnecessary war.

We are fed up with civility being used as an excuse to not call a spade a spade, especially after six long years of being treated as though questioning the motives or conduct of this administration was tantamount to treason.

Please understand, Madam Speaker, that our passionate anger over what this president has been allowed to do to our once-great nation is now at the boiling point, and referring to the lies of this administration as “misrepresentations of the truth”, disguising spying on US citizens as “a matter of national security”, and couching acts of torture in phrases like “enhanced interrogation techniques” is no longer acceptable.

People are angry, Madam Speaker, and frustrated with being expected to limit their words to what is pleasing to the ear – all for the sake of a civility that ceased to exist when George W. Bush lied to this country and not one of our elected representatives yelled “liar”, when torture was sanctioned and no one yelled “war criminals”, when tens of thousands of Iraqis die as a result of this government’s policies and no one screams “murderers”, when billions of taxpayers’ dollars go missing and no one shouts “thieves”.

Yes, Madam Speaker, We the People are tired of restricting ourselves to the courteous repartee that politicians indulge in when trying to avoid the unpleasantness of the truth.

It is not unlike referring to our elected Democrats as being weak in their endeavors, as opposed to the more accurate term of “spineless”. It is akin to calling those we elected to their present positions as being unaware of our concerns, instead of simply calling them “deliberately deaf, dumb and blind”. It is comparable to saying that taking impeachment off the table is simply a strategy to be employed in dangerous political times, instead of using the more blunt phrase of “dereliction of duty”. It is like saying that not defunding the war is a matter of compromise rather than using more appropriate terms like “caving in” or “complicity” in the ongoing crime against humanity this war represents.

With all due respect, Madam Speaker, the only thing Mr. Stark should be rebuked for is his penchant for being unspeakably polite in the circumstances, in a situation where toes should not be avoided by one’s steps, but stomped upon with the full force of the blatantly obvious truths of where we are as a people, and where we are headed as a nation.

As for the rest of our elected Democrats in office, you might consider rebuking them for the fact that Mr. Stark was left to speak out as one voice, when he should have been just one of many.

As always, Madam Speaker, I wish you good luck when your time for re-election comes around – as it inevitably will. Perhaps by then you will have proven yourself as a true representative of the people who put you in office in the first instance, and will have shed your present image as the disappointment of a lifetime.

Your Most Truly,
Nancy Greggs
US Citizen, Democrat, and Totally Irate Voter

(Edited to add: Yes, this was sent to Ms. Pelosi's office earlier this evening.)

COMMENTS:
I have never received any reply from you. Why?

I matter. I am a citizen of this country and a concerned registered democrat who voted. I have written your office many times, I have taken the time to voice my concern to you but you neither acknowledge my correspondence or seem concerned about what so many in this nation are raising their voices in fear and dare I say trembling about.
This is not a noise about a political objective, it is a valid response to a frightening and corrupt takeover of freedom. Many have died throughout our history to preserve this idea of democracy and liberty. What has been your sacrifice? Again, I dare and say you have sacrificed nothing in this call. You won't even give a response to me or the millions of others calling on you to act responsibly to our country. In fact, you felt your responsibility to America started when you refused to consider what you are Constitutionally obligated and mandated to uphold in your position as Speaker of the House of Representatives. You, Nancy Pelosi, took the Impeachment of a corrupt, and willfully deceitful ruler/decider/lawbreaking president off the table.
The future is in your hands - history is your responsibility.
I don't have children. I don't have grandchildren. What do you tell your own grandchildren if you have any?
Do you look into a child's eyes and promise them freedom and liberty? You give us excuses for your cowardess. You pass the buck saying there isn't the votes for acting. You owe the country, history, the future, and the world - yes, the world community an option for something beside the
holocaust that feels inevitable. This administration lied to you, the Congress, the American people, the United Nations about a war that has cost Iraq over one million civilian deaths and nearing 4,000 American soldiers. We don't even hear about the other war, the unfinished and also unsuccessful Afghanistan debacle where American soldiers are killed, along with civilian deaths. Did this war and these deaths leave your memory as well? What about Iran? We know it's the next killing field, and you do too.
You have a responsibility to act.
You are as bad a Captain as he is
Commander-in-Chief.
Don't bother responding to me about this, I can't stomach your excuses.
If you don't believe this administration is criminal, explain the violations to my Constitutional Rights. Or, pretend this doesn't exist as well.

Coward.

I am a big fan of civility but the time has come for plain old truth telling and if it takes Rep. Pete Stark from California to do it, then so be it. Mr. Stark does not deserve to be rebuked. He should be praised. And I, for one, will do just that.

This is a most profound letter.

It is time for Lady Speaker of the House and the others to understand that this is a treacherous time in our Nations History...it is apparant that she and the other Dems have forgotten how the Republicans treated President Clinton...they blocked everything he tried to do...they badmouthed him every chance they got....and there was absolutely no respect given by them.

* had his chance at receiving respect and Courtesy...the man is wanting to start WWIII and the Dems are worried about civility....

Bravo Nancy Bravo...

10. Where's Andrew Jackson when we need him?
The first Democratic President*. The establishment was appalled when he got the nomination. He was not "couth." Said things gentlefolk don't say. Well, those gentlefolk were busily undoing the work of the Founders, building a power base in the Central Bank of the United States that could be likened to today's big business stranglehold on government. Jackson called BS on them. He invited commonfolk into the WH for his inaugural party; they broke dishes and stood on furniture with muddy boots (the story of his riding his horse into the WH is, I believe, only an urban legend). Jackson then went on to kill the Central Bank - said it concentrated too much power in the hands of an elite few.

We need an Andy Jackson, or a Harry Truman, to "give 'em hell." Bush needs to be called out for the lying bastard he is. "Respect for the office" is no longer valid, as long as he holds the office.

Hell, if Nancy wants to keep impeachment "off the table," she has to at least expect the occasional muttered "motherfucker" or "asshole." What planet is she living on?

*People called Jackson a jackass. He thought that was funny, joked about being "Jackass Jackson," started using it as a personal symbol. That is how the Democratic Party got the donkey mascot.

15. indeed
the democratic party may just have gotten too mature. Too many elitists at the top. DINOs.

We need a modern-day Jackass Jackson to lead the charge in throwing them all out. Well, most of them.

The Founders envisioned the House as having a fairly high turnover rate. Going to congress for two years would be a brief interruption to one's career - then one would return to the farm, or the law practice, or the cobbler shop or whatever.

With seniority having so much weight in Congress, gerrymandering to create "safe" districts, and a steady flow of cash under the table, the whole thing has been perverted. Now people make a career out of being in Congress. Not out of doing anything, just out of being there. The first order of business when you get there is to plan how to stay.

And sadly, when constituents DO get pissed and throw the bum out, the new person they send is a "freshman," gets no respect, gets minor committee assignments... The "old boys club" that the Founders were trying to avoid has taken over anyway.

Nance, you do speak well and reiterate my feelings on how things are. I too reached of point of disgust at it all. I know you have written other letters to her and I hate to say it, but I don't believe Pelosi does read any of them as it goes to many hired underlings that 'filter through it' and the basic gist if we are lucky might get to her. I feel your frustration as you may be feeling mine too, but we keep trying to get through to somebody to actually hear and obey the people. This is no longer a government by or for the people and it royally (pun intended with royally) pisses me off. ARE YOU LISTENING KING GEORGE?

edit to add:

It occurs to me W is like those monkeys that are see no evil, hear no evil, etc. except he thought it was requests to do those very nasty things and so we have a new one that has his thumbs up his ass and is the reason for the others.

... and unfortunately, it is most probably true.

However, just as a vote not cast cannot be 'stolen' at the same time it cannot be counted, so one letter may NOT be read -- but if left unsent, it can NEVER be read.

Will Speaker Pelosi heed ONE letter? Probably not. Will she heed a MILLION letters? Probably - and I hope my missive was just one of those million.

Nance,
I post very little here but do read an awful lot. You have very eloquently stated how a lot of us feel. We sure could use Jackass Jackson. And yeah, why are these assholes so concerned about being nice when they took the gloves off on Bill? For what? I'm still tryin' to figure that one out. We need more Starks. What the hell are these Dems afraid of? Can they not see the light? It truly is looking more and more like a one party system, except for they true patriots like Stark, that are "mad as hell and not gonna take it any more!!! WTF!!! Frogcyle, thanks for the education on the donkey symbol for the Dems...didn't know that. But they are truly looking like jackasses as of late, eh?

34. not to go totally OT
But, I would not hold up Andrew Jackson as a paragon of common folk virtue.

He along with the governor of Georgia were the architects of the 'removal' or as we would call it today, ethnic cleansing of the Native American tribes from Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Alabama. Furthermore he was challenged and lost at the Supreme Court, whereupon he ignored the ruling and proceeded with some of the worst acts of genocide in American history.

Back on topic:

"Mr. Finch, there's a mad dog on the loose!"

"Calpurnia, get me my gun."

'Nuff said.

(Edited to add: Jesus H., considering the times in which we live, I have to point out the fact that 'Calpurnia, get me my gun' is not now, nor ever will be, a call to violence against Ms. Pelosi or any other politician in office.

We do, however, have the power of the vote - and Ms. Pelosi should take heed of same before measuring her office for new drapes, or considering her possible election to dog-catcher as a done deal.)

40. I rarely have anything to add to your eloquent prose
but I always rec your threads.

However, in all these long months after 4 compromised elections, and totally bereft of representative leadership, with an outraged majority of the populace and in the face of legalized sadism under the absolute mind blowing ruse of "values voters" (as if anyone could possibly be anti family) I'll only add this. . .

Blatant corruption and abuse of power were never remedied with graciousness alone.

We've witnessed him smirk through all sorts of distortions and heinous stuff for nearly 7 years, and most recently he chuckled through a vague reference to WWIII.

His biographers say that he blew up frogs with fireworks as a kid for shits and giggles.

Most kids wouldn't even conceive of doing so.

How far fetched is it to think that he isn't amused by all the carnage and destruction ?

To speculate that 1.2 million dead Iraqis (that's what the Brits estimate) weighs at all on this man's consciousness is foolishness.

He's far too busy smirking all the time.

Now knowing that his VP's office disabled a women and her covert organization dedicated to deter nuclear proliferation with total impunity, the time for graciousness and civility has long since passed.

Priorities, priorities, priorities, indeed.

45. Nance, I took a liberty with this--I hope you don't mind
Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 04:15 AM by DFW
As a child of Capitol Hill (way back when, but I keep in touch from afar),
I'm well aware of the unmentioned (and unwanted) hidden rules of the game
of that place, as well as the fact that many members of Congress are forced
to bite their tongues when the thing they would most like to do is shout
their rage from the highest mountain top.

Nonetheless, as Rep. Stark has finally dared to say on the floor of the House
what so many of us were thirsting to hear for SO long, I thought for sure that
more members of Congress, at least of our party, would dare to speak out in
support. I also expected more than virtual silence from the House leadership,
no matter WHAT kind of egg shells they are forced to walk on as part of the
realities of their situation.

Therefore, I passed on your letter, in its entirety, to a friend high up in
the DNC who has (only slightly!) more time than Howard to read it. He is in
touch with Howard daily (with me, it's more like once a month), and he is a
better shot at spreading this around than I am. Howard will see it--I don't know
if he'll read it, but the people just under him will. I don't usually do this, but
this time, even my disappointment is reaching the breaking point.

With apologies to Elton John, "hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind"

66. Not only do I NOT mind ...
... I am truly flattered that you think it worthy of being passed along.

I actually AM fully cognizant that certain courtesies of language and demeanor are expected on the Hill, and biting one's tongue is an unfortunate part of the job. However, the GOP have set a far different tone during this Administration, and perhaps it's time to play by their rules (or lack thereof), and give as good as we got.

You know the old saying: "Never mud wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty, but only the pig actually enjoys it."

That may be true, but sometimes getting dirty is what's called for; sometimes it's the only way to get that pig on the ground.

Thanks again!

Assuming Speaker Pelosi reads what you've written, I can't see how she can avoid hanging her head in shame. Pete Stark has said what needed to be said, while Madam Speaker has tip-toed around the Republican cesspool trying to ignore its very existence.

On edit: I know her goal is to get a Dem in the White House and larger majorities in the house and senate. But her strategies and tactics have become worse than useless and extremely damaging to the country.

for expressing the majority's view in direct language, something most of our political leaders find too difficult. What will it take, short of severe anatomical surgery, to get the Democratic leadership to reject anal rape as long as the Republicans use some lubricant?
The triangulation method only works when you have a smart, articulate, charismatic leader like Bill Clinton.
The Democratic leadership seems to think if we take enough shots to the head the Republicans will tire or hurt their hands.
That the Republicans have no shame should be evident. Witness House Minority Leader, John Boner, handing out tobacco lobby bribes on the House floor during a vote on tobacco legislation.
With impeachment off the table, maybe withholding campaign contributions to Democrats who enable Republicans should be shouted from the roof tops until they do the peoples' business.
If they fail to represent the majority, what follows, pitch forks and torches?

I was waiting for you to say "incompetent" regarding our Speaker, but you are far more correct with derelict of duty.

Which makes it an even greater crime insofar as we are fully confident she can lead in the face of this evil, but chooses not to.

So I'd only throw "moral coward" in there for good measure.

Or would that upset Nancy's delicate sensibilities?

59. DO NOT CRITICIZE NANCE !!!
Nance wrote "with all due respect".

Exactly how much respect is due is this case is open to interpretation.

Personally I don't hate Nancy Pelosi but I do agree that Democrats in Congress need to be more aggressive in how they criticize and challenge the Bu$h-Cheney Presidency and its loyal servants.

HOWEVER, I also understand that --- as much as we hate it now -- it is necessary to recognize the authority and the responsibility of the Executive Branch. Just like WE expect Republicans in Congress to recognize the next President who we hope will be a Democrat.

As Democrats our first instinct is to play by the rules, like good sportsmen and women.

Unfortunately the other side believes in prevailing by any means necessary...

Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 12:37 PM by Kurovski
you'd think the gloves would be off. Did they think Cheney was kidding?

I especially like this part:

"... dealing with people who are about to keep our poorer children from accessing necessary healthcare – there were no “feelings” to be considered, simply because anyone who would oppose such assistance obviously has no feelings at all..."

K&R.

Edited to say: I think part of Bush's vetoing of SCHIP is to provide a way for Republicans who have supported Bush's every move to now distance themselves from him. Bush's popularity is in the toilet and elections are coming up.

After Cheney's statement, the gloves should have been off - and every time a Dem was disparaged for not displaying the proper decorum, they should have stood up and reiterated what Cheney said - verbatim - until it was hammered home.

Edited on Mon Oct-22-07 05:02 PM by bjobotts
She is unwilling to listen or to do what is necessary to stop this administration. She is a DC insider and has hers so won't upset the cart.

Her tactics are dictated by the 'beltway' and they have been wrong since 2004 on everything, saying dems would be seen as weak on terrorism or national security if they disagreed with Bush...that they would lose election in '06 because of their 'cut and run' rhetoric...but just the opposite happened, not one sitting democrat lost their seat, and voters even turned over governors mansions across the nation to dems spouting anti-war rhetoric. If they would have listened to the Beltway or DC insiders they would have lost elections. Why Pelosi continues to ignore the polls and the will of the people thinking she knows best is a reflection of Bush stubbornness. She has made up her mind and closed her ears and refuses to recognize her oath of office or her duty. Now with Iran next inline for mass murder she remains smug in defending our constitution or us.

Pelosi is making us live with "what if" or rather "if only" much to our despair. Good on you for using your amazing writing talent to call her out...if only she would listen.

71. Honestly, I believe they are both honourable people ...
... there's nothing wrong with them as people, IMHO - but there is a lot wrong with their thinking, and the way they have chosen to go about things.

They both seem to have adopted the "speak softly, but carry a big stick" philosophy - without realizing that every once in a while you have to actually wave that big stick in people's faces, and be prepared to swing it with all your might, if you want to be taken seriously by your enemies, as well as by your supporters.

I think we all realize that there is a very fine line that must be walked in these political times. We are headed into an election that will change the course of the nation. You don't want to distance the disillusioned GOP voters who want change - at the same time, you don't want to distance your own hard-core supporters.

Methinks they have both stepped too far away from that line to be meaningful to anyone.

But what do I know? I'm just one of millions of pissed-off citizens - and I'm not running for anything. And if I was, I'd be soundly trounced at the polls.
