John Edwards - NYT: Looking for President Dean
Edited on Sat Oct-20-07 11:20 PM by jsamuel
Where is President Dean?

This notion came up when John Edwards was asked at a news conference here in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday how he was going to overtake Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. And using his old lawyer tactics, he asked questions to make his point.

“Have we had an election yet?” Mr. Edwards replied to the reporter. “What is there to overtake?”

Well, you know what the polls are showing, the reporter pressed on.

“I know what they showed in 2003 and I haven’t met President Dean yet,” Mr. Edwards said. “I don’t think he got the nomination and I don’t think he became elected president.”

...

“I have heard all these same questions in the fall of 2003,” he said today. “What I know is once we get ready to actually vote, it will not be an auction. It will actually be an election. And people are going to look at who is ready to be president. And who has the ideas to move this country forward.”

...

1. That was insulting the first time he said it.
And it is this time as well.

He and Obama have this thing going about pointing that out.

2. I am sure they both love Dean, just like they like Clinton. The point isn't about the candidate as
much as it is about the media, polls, and the election process.

4. I still don't think it's meant to be.
He makes a valid point. There isn't a plainer way to say it.

7. Dean often makes fun of pols, polls and cash...
My favorite Dean quote:

"If this campaign was about how much money was raised, I'd be giving this interview from the Oval Office"

8. Oh, I get that.

But the ability to hold onto the lead status is a product of your machine. Less machine, less hold. Big machine, more hold.

10. In mid Dec '03 he was polling 27% and Kerry was polling 7% in Gallup/USA Today
and Newsweek had them at 26% and 6%.

NBC/WSJ had them at 29% and 6%.

Pew had them at 27% and 7%.

ABC/Wash Post had them at 31% and 8%.

Edwards is doing better against Clinton now than Kerry was doing against Dean in Dec before the Iowa Primary.

12. Edwards is doing better than Kerry was doing, and he hasn't started his media buys yet,
and he has more money now than Kerry had in '03.

14. Dead had, roughly four times the support Kerry had. Hillary, about 3 times Edwards.
Edited on Sun Oct-21-07 12:28 AM by 1932
Kerry was geeting 6-7%. Edwards about 12-15%.

Hillary is way out in front. But she is spending almost literally 100x more than Edwards, who does have the money to run more adds than Kerry ran to beat Dean.
