North Carolina: Hillary 31%, Obama 18%, Edwards 18%...

The Civitas Institute's monthly DecisionMaker poll showed Clinton widening her lead in the Democratic presidential primary in North Carolina.

The New York senator had 31 percent, followed by a tie at 18 percent between Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and former senator John Edwards. Nineteen percent were not sure.

Among Republicans, former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee ceded the top spot to the former mayor of New York City. Giuliani led with 21 percent, followed by Thompson at 19 percent and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 16 percent.

Twenty four percent were not sure.

The poll of 800 likely voters was taken by Tel Opinion Research between Oct. 9 through 14. It had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.7 percent.

And for Mr. Zulu...note the MoE...

2. What makes you think Hillary isn't the second choice for most of their supporters...
Polls certainly indicate that...

6. Obama needs to beat Edwards with a stick
That's what will solidify his standing as the one to beat Clinton. They're not allies; they are opponents.

16. Its too early for Obama to go after Edwards.
Maybe next month.

For now, both candidates need to see if their stepped up criticism of Hillary has any effect on her poll standing.

If by mid-Nov, she stays where she is with little movement, you may see Obama turn his sight towards Edwards hoping to push him out of the way.

Of course that could open the door for Biden or Richardson.

I love primary season!

19. I think it should have happened already over the summer
Biden or Richardson could have closed in on Edwards's level by now, making the second tier a two-way and the first tier a two-way. I think in that situation Obama could have stemmed some of his losses. Clinton has been the beneficiary of Edwards's stability (even though not moving up, he's been steady where he is for a few months), because it blurs the competitive matchups of the field and leaves Hillary where she is in a class by herself. I don't mean to say she wouldn't have moved up, obviously, but he could have held on better than he has recently. If he has to have this fight with Edwards in November, she's already way stronger than she was earlier, and it's a lot tougher than it had to be.

20. Obama was trying to run the nice guy race, but his campaign message is too broad
I have been saying for months that he should be hammering at his proposals for government reofrm and transparency.

He has the legislation, the record to draw upon and an excellent climate for pushing his outsider message. But he needs to focus on his strengths which are government reform & good judgement.

Given how its shaped up I would tend to agree with your assessment that he should have taken out Edwards. But its difficult for someone ahead in the polls to attack someone behind them directly and Edwards was only willing to poke the bear once, in that first debate (when Obama crushed him with his response).

21. Edwards is attacking him now
with this beefed up 'I can win everywhere' campaign. Obama's needs to start a counterattack, and he can start by asking why.

I thought Edwards was in single digits in NC. I looked at RCP and Pollster but don't see the previous polling.

24. Hollar Oboma till the cows come home he isn't going to be the winner
John Edwards and Joe Biden will be the winners in 2008...Neither Oboma or Hillary can carry the bigots in the south....North Carolina is a little different, they are democrats at the state level and go republican at the fed. Level...There is only one man that can win the election for the W.H. and that is going to be Edwards, the religious right is going to turn away from the republicans, and John Edwards the mill workers son will be their kind of guy.
