(Adds comments by Bush administration, Republican
senator)

By Doug Palmer

WASHINGTON, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Congress could act
quickly to block a new Bush administration pilot program
allowing long haul Mexican trucks to operate anywhere
in the United States, a U.S. senator said on Monday.

"My hope is the Senate will do as the House has done
and we will put the brakes on the pilot program," Sen.
Byron Dorgan, a North Dakota Democrat, told reporters.

Dorgan proposed an amendment denying funding for
the one-year program, which was begun late last week.

But John Hill, administrator of the Transportation
Department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration, said Mexican trucks and drivers have
to meet safety standards "that in many respects are
higher than the standards for their U.S. counterparts."

5. Yeah, but at this point it's apparent NAFTA didn't deliver the hoped for results...
Just because it seemed like a good idea back then, we've found that not to be so. Although (to my dismay) most of the candidates are willing to "fix" Nafta rather than trash it, this certainly could qualify as a "fix" -- don't you think?

3. Again, I just have to ask
why more isn't being done to cover this in the news? And why hasn't this been addressed by the Dem candidates?

7. Poor Senator Dorgan
Edited on Mon Sep-10-07 07:17 PM by jamesinca
he is going to get a law suit filed against the US under NAFTA chapter 11. If we a NAFTA nation should interfere with the profit of a company in a NAFTA nation, they can bring a lawsuit that is decided by an arbitrator and be payed by the tax payers of the losing NAFTA nation. Why do you think we lifted the ban on mad cow infected Canadian beef? If Sen. Dorgan uses this as a gateway to ending NAFTA, CAFTA and other corporatist pig sins then I am all for it.
