Edwards: Congress should use all tools to demand troop withdrawal
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 08:52 AM by draft_mario_cuomo
==By Holly Ramer, Associated Press Writer | August 26, 2007

==The former North Carolina senator started the last day of his four-day bus tour of New Hampshire outside Manchester's City Hall, where he told several hundred people that they should ask themselves two key questions when the report is released. First, has Iraq made progress toward a political solution? And second, how long will troops be deployed if there is no progress?

==He repeated his stance that Congress should not submit any Iraq funding bill to President Bush unless it includes a timetable for withdrawing troops.

"All the Democrats have to do is what America wants them to do," he said later in Hampton. "It's not like they're taking some unpopular decision. I think we ought to be willing to take an unpopular position if it's the right thing to do, but this is not an unpopular position, this is what America actually wants to have done."

At all his stops, Edwards emphasized that Democrats should use every tool available, including filibusters, to push for a timetable for withdrawal.==

4. Just love that word fillibuster when it comes to this damn war
Chris Matthews said after Gozo told us he was quitting, that bush was getting rid of the dead limbs. What troubles me big time is if bush feels he has more time to devote to War-ing. Our Democratic Congress needs to keep the fire under george for his remaining days - - keep him out of evil mischief. Keep the war issue front and center, daily.

5. Great. This is a variation on what Kucinich has been saying for ages
I'm glad Edwards has joined DK in demanding that Congress stand up to the bullying from the White House.
As DK explained several months ago, there was never any need to send Bush some sort of milquetoast funding bill for his signature. There was never a need to send him any bill. The best course of action for Congress would've been to force his hand by sending him no bill at all.

The Constitution is in tatters but the last time I checked, Congress still retained the power of the purse.

Hooray for the primaries. They should be a growth process not a coronation.
Edwards' admirable statement reinforces the benefits of taking our time to choose a nominee.
