Poll Shows Sununu (R-NH) in Deep Trouble
Edited on Fri Jul-20-07 11:18 PM by welshTerrier2
The latest WMUR/University of New Hampshire poll shows Sen. John Sununu (R-NH) losing his re-election race badly if faced by former Gov. Jeanne Shaheen (D). Shaheen would win 54% to 38%.

10. There's An Old, Tired, Joke
...that I first heard applied, by a New Hampshire resident, to John Sununu.

Q.: You're locked in a room with an enraged gorilla, a rabid dog, & John Sununu. You have a gun, but only two bullets. What do you do?

A.: Shoot Sununu twice.

Thanks, you've been a great audience.

6. Here's hoping that Shaheen jumps in with a great big splash and
drowns that worthless droid for the U.S. Senate seat.

I won't miss him none, that's for sure.

It would be a huge lift to deepen the blue up in New Hampshire and dump Sunununununu in the process.

Go, Democrats.

9. Don't need Shaheen
Sununu can be beaten by Steve Marchand, and almost certainly by Katrina Swett and Jay Buckey.

Steve is actually a refreshing new voice and could actually be a far stronger challenger than Shaheen, who still carries the baggage of her sales tax debacle.

20. The article said all these candidates are trailing Sununu.
I want someone who can win. Jeanne Shaheen is clearly far ahead of Sununu.

24. Only on name recognition
Shaheen ran statewide in 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2002, in addition to three races for the state senate in Strafford County.

Marchand has never run outside of Portsmouth.

If Marchand is in a dead heat with a guy who has won three races for Congress and one for the Senate, and who shares a name with a former governor and WH chief of staff, then I'd say his chances are pretty damn good.

Marchand and Buckey are also fresh faces without some of Shaheen's baggage, ie, her plan to implement a general sales tax. Shaheen's sales tax hurt her badly in southern tier communities like Nashua, Salem and Plaistow.

22. Help me out. The polls indicate to the contrary, suggesting that Shaheen
is the stronger candidate against Sununununu by far.

What am I missing?

25. It's her name recognition
Shaheen has better name recognition at this point. She has been on the statewide ballot four times, plus three times in her old state senate district. Marchand has never run outside of the city of Portsmouth, so his name rec is largely limited to Portsmouth and surrounding towns like Newington, Rye and Greenland. Buckey is a political newcomer who has never run for office before.

I don't think that Shaheen will ultimately end up running. I think her husband wants to play kingmaker, though, and by keeping Jeanne's name in the mix, he buys additional time.

7. May I ask a question about the Sununu clan by way of Bush's
State-of-the-Union warning about beasts?

Something about genetically altered beasts or some sort of hideous animal(s). He included this warning in his State-of-the-Union address. I wasn't sure myself what sort of creature he was referring to, and wasn't even certain he knew himself. But it was there in the speech all the same.

Which brings me to the Sununu clan up in New Hampshire. I know people who claim they detect a certain porcine aspect to Daddy Sununu, the former White House flunkie for Republican presidents who were nearly as bad as this one.

Could be they're right, and could be therefore that the current U.S. Senator Sununu carries this porcine gene, this set of porcine genes, perhaps.

Just up late and musing here. Could the John Sununus be the beasts Bush alluded to in his State-of-the-Union address?

If so, it's yet another compelling reason to vote Democratic.

Look at the idiot son in New Jersey. Look at this guy. Look at the one in the White House!

Further, I kinda dislike (Dem or Republic) most second generation pols. It is as if there's some birthright to office they have.

19. Are you sure Sununu won the election last time? I don't think he did.
What machines count the votes in NH? Are there audits?

I know there was a partial recount but it was only partial and if I remember correctly the pre-election polls did not favor Sununu and the exit polls were far from agreeing with the alleged machine results either.

26. Yeah, he won
There isn't any question about it. There were plenty of recounts for legislative and county races, and there weren't any discrepancies that couldn't be attributed to Aunt Flossie writing the wrong number down on a tally sheet after her eyesight failed at 11 PM, or two ballots getting stuck together as they ran through the scanner.

I attended a couple of the recounts, and the hand count matched the machine count.
