Reid Announces Senate Filibuster? Isn't that wording wrong? (it's a Filibuster-BUSTER)
Edited on Mon Jul-16-07 02:07 PM by kansasblue
The Republicans are using the Senate Filibuster to prevent the vote on the amendment.

Reid will keep the Senate in session if the Republicans Filibuster and remain in session until they allow a vote on the amendment.

Reid is fighting against the filibuster.

3. The Dems are beating them to the punch; Reid wants to stay in sesson
all night long to hash out a date to get out of Iraq. At least that's what I'm understanding; MSNBC fronted with Dems filibustering, and played some cheezy clips from Mr. Smith.

4. Excellent. Feingold said in a recent speech that we can count on Reid.
And yes, that wording is wrong. Where did you see it?

5. FINALLY!!!!!
The wording is perhaps wrong, but if this means he is calling their bluff, it's about time.

They have been caving in when cloture failed for too long. Make the SOB's filibuster! Stay in session, make one of the assholes get up there and read from the phone book or whatever, let the public see it day after day.

10. Reid announcing it highlights Republican obstructionism
And also highlights Democratic efforts to end the war, which is the will of the American public. It's a very, very intelligent strategy.

12. Do you all remember a few years back Reid spent like 8 hours on the senate floor
reading from his own book? Reid is a good parliamentarian, he knows the senate rules i think better than almost anyone. He used to punk Frist all the time with those rules.

14. Watching Reid's balls drop is a slow process
Good for him, I guess. As usual though, Harry is late and short. The Dems should have been calling the Repukes out for their hypocrisy on this from the beginning of the Dem's reign. The Repukes have been filibustering bills for months now, and the Dem leadership is too timid to even point it out, or to call for the Repukes to stop their 'obstructionism' and ask for an 'up or down vote'.

C'mon Harry. Admit it. That bone-like structure developing in your back feels pretty good.

15. Actually, the Dems have the moral high ground on this.
They gave the Repubs time to negotiate a compromise and to avoid the obstructionist conduct. The Dems are calling the Repubs on this. This will be very good for Democratic fundraising. We should reward the Democrat Congressional fundraising campaigns when they stand up to the Republicans and ignore their appeals when they don't. It's Pavovlian strategy. Positive reinforcement for showing backbone. Negative reinforcement for weakness. I'm normally all for compromise and negotiation, but the Republicans are not willing to meet the Democrats half-way and use every willingness to compromise as a propaganda tool against the Democrats.

16. Youngdem: what you don't understand
Is that Reid may have wanted to do this all along, however, he couldn't pull it off until enough members of his caucus supported him to do it. And of course Reid couldn't announce that he was trying to oppose the filibuster but couldn't get enough of his own party on board just yet.

The man who flipped the Senate in 2001 was Reid.

He is not stupid, he is not weak and he is not afraid.

If you think otherwise, perhaps you don't really understand what's going on.

By the way, without much warning, Reid turned on a dime during the spring when he realized he could get a majority to support troop withdrawal and he got that passed.

It's one thing if you disagree with him, but it's a low thing to say things out of ignorance that amount to slander of Reid.

17. The Dems should cancel vacations plans
The Iraqis are taking August off, the Dems should force a showdown with the Rebubs and keep the session open. It will bring the point home to the 59 million bush voters that the congress is still working trying to move forward and the Iraqis are off on vacation.
