Edwards Slams Bush During Campaign Stop
Edwards Slams Bush During Campaign Stop
WHOTV--Des Moines
Thursday, July 12, 2007

----
The war in Iraq was the main topic of discussion Thursday night for presidential candidate John Edwards. Edwards was in Fort Dodge addressing supporters.

Channel 13's Dave Price spoke one-on-one with Edwards after the event.

Edwards expressed the difference in his views with President Bush, telling Iowans Bush has made the world worse since taking office.

"What's happened is, Al Qaeda has become a significant force in Iraq because of the failures of the Bush administration."

Edwards talked for about 45 minutes in front of nearly 400 people inside the Fort Dodge library.

He spoke of the need to immediately start bringing home 40,000 to 50,000 troops and also discussed the new government report Bush claims shows progress in Iraq.

"To suggest that the surge is working and that we're making progress through the surge is just absolute nonsense," says Edwards.

"I think the president's delusional about what's happening in Iraq," Edwards said. "He doesn't understand the practicalities of what's happening--either that or he's just completely fooling himself and trying to fool the country."

Edwards went on to say the United States is less safe because of Bush's policy. "It's a very simple formula. America has less allies than they had before, and according to Bush's own state department, there are more terrorists in the world," he said. "Less allies, more terrorists, means America's less safe."

1. Bush's (and Cheney's) natural reaction to questions about "al Qaeda in
Iraq" has trended consistently toward the lie that al Qaeda was there prior to the assault on Baghdad and that Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attacks.

Both are lies.

Edwards' comments choke the administration's position to death at the outset and then proceeds to blame Bush for making the world less safe as a consequence of his foreign policy blunders.

Excellent strategy.

This is short, sweet, and to the point. This is exactly the kind of concise rhetoric we need if we are to win the war of ideas with the Republicans on terrorism. K and R
