N.H. poll puts Gore over Clinton

By Ralph Z. Hallow June 27, 200

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE / 3:13 p.m.

Former Vice President Al Gore is New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's worst nightmare in the nation"s first primary, a new poll shows.

If Mr. Gore got into the 2008 presidential nomination contest, he would edge out Mrs. Clinton in New Hampshire 32 percent to 26 percent and defeat the rest of the Democratic contenders, says a 7NEWS-Suffolk University poll of likely voters.

"Gore is the only Democrat, including Hillary, who can instantly melt the field,"
said David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center, which conducted the survey.

Absent a Gore entry, Mrs. Clinton is the clear front-runner among declared Democratic candidates, with 37 percent, up from 28 percent in the same poll taken in March.
Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is second at 19 percent, followed by both John Edwards and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson at 9 percent.

1. New Hampshire does realize, I hope, that Al Gore, so far, isn't running.
We can all wish and hope, but as of now, he's not in the mix...

I do hope they realize that... :eyes:

3. I do believe New Hampshire Democrats are quite well-informed so they would
be aware of that. :)

10. Union Leader has an article up now:
Clinton in the lead (unless Gore runs?); McCain, Giuliani slip in GOP survey

Boston – A New Hampshire presidential poll by WHDH-TV and Suffolk University shows that local Democrats prefer Al Gore to any of the current contenders.

Hillary Clinton has a solid lead over the rest of the current Democratic field. The poll, released this afternoon, shows 37 percent of likely Democratic voters backing Clinton or leaning towards her. Barack Obama was at 19 percent, with both John Edwards and Bill Richardson at 9 percent.

Al Gore, however, could enter the race as the leader. When his name is added, Clinton loses more than a quarter of her support, while Gore is backed by 32 percent.

Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani lead the GOP field. The former Massachusetts governor is supported by 26 percent of likely GOP voters, with Giuliani slipping to 22 percent. John McCain and Fred Thompson are both at 13 percent, a major move backwards for McCain. Romney's support, which relies heavily on younger voters, is up 7 percent from a comparable poll in March, when he trailed Giuliani (37 percent) and McCain (27 percent).

The poll, which has a 4.4 percent margin of error, surveyed 500 likely voters from June 20 to 24.

12. I do believe that we in New Hampshire realize that fact.
However, as a NH Democrat, I appreciate seeing the poll.

Poll: Clinton on Course to Win NH
6/27/2007

With the New Hampshire Presidential Primaries less than seven months away, the Democratic Primary has a clear front-runner, while the Republican Primary is still too close to call, according to a 7NEWS-Suffolk University poll.

Of likely Democratic voters, 37 percent said they support or lean to Hillary Clinton, 19 percent picked Barack Obama, while John Edwards and Bill Richardson each received 9 percent. Just 16 percent were undecided.

“Hillary Clinton clears the field and with only 16 percent undecided; it is unlikely that any of her announced opponents will catch her," said Suffolk University Political Research Center Director David Paleologos.

Younger voters favor Obama
Clinton’s large lead over Obama is driven by an age gap, not a gender gap. Among younger voters (ages 18-45), Obama led Clinton, 26 percent-to-25 percent, but among older voters (ages 56 and over), Clinton trounced Obama, 47 percent-to-15 percent.

The Gore factor
The only obstacle for Clinton in the Democratic primary is Al Gore. Twenty-nine percent of Clinton voters would switch to Gore if he announced for president, and when all of the switches from other Democratic candidates were recalculated, Gore would defeat Clinton. In total, 32 percent of Democratic voters would support Gore over the candidate they are currently leaning toward.

11. Volatile, but significant
True, polls are pretty meaningless so far ahead of time. Even with the declared candidates, I see a huge differences from poll to poll. One has Edwards leading by double digits, the other one has Clinton first, etc etc.

But I think the Gore factor is far more difficult to measure, because a lot depends on how the question is phrased more than in regular horse race polls. Most Democrats *assume* he's not running. So unless the person is asked very specifically to consider a race with Al Gore in it, the results will vary wildly. This poll does that, asking the question with and without Gore. And I see no reason not to believe it, since Gore has always done very well in NH.
