Obama vs. Romney
That would be a decent campaign: It'd be our best candidate against probably the only halfway viable candidate they have.

Likely outcomes (based on nothing but my "gut"):

Either way, we'd end up with universal health care.

Many of the more secular "social conservatives" would vote Democratic, but Romney would win more than half.

The evangelicals would largely stay home, but more than half of those that did vote would vote for Obama.

Most working-class white men would vote for Romney because he is more like them.

White-collar men would be split.

Fiscal conservatives would be confused, but they'd vote Romney as "default" choice.

Obama would get the vast majority of the black vote and the college-kid vote.

Women would break for Obama (slightly), except in the most affluent suburbs.

End of the day: Obama would win -- probably with a bigger electoral landslide than the popular vote might seem to indicate.

It isn't as if other popular candidates are limited to one or two groups.

2. Romney is a transparent phony
Sure lots of GOPers go gaga over his Reagan impersonation, but eventually this will wear thin. And in the real world, his religion will be a liability--it may spur a 3rd party evangelical challenge, especially if Romney begins tacking to the center.
