Edwards should HAMMER that bumper sticker point
It will resonate if he sticks to it and explains what he means. He's absolutely right, and the rest of them are absolutely wrong. And its not hard or time-consuming to explain. We can't lose on this point. After his defeat, even Rick Santorum made this point. (Funny he never bothered to mention it when it was still useful to him.)

I sure hope he sticks to this point and doesn't let the RW media or RW Democrats scare him off it. Its vital that we get back to campaigning about what we believe in. If he fights back hard, it could move his numbers significantly, in my opinion.

4. Edwards quote...
"The war on terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan," Edwards said. "It has damaged our alliances and weakened our standing in the world."

6. Edwards got this right on the money
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 11:32 PM by ProgressiveAmPatriot
I was extremely impressed when he said that. It is the kind of thing Lakoff, a brilliant cognitive linguist who has written extensively on political language and framing, advocates. Every progressive should read Lakoff's latest book Thinking Points, which is available online or costs about 10 bucks for a paper copy. http://www.rockridgeinstitute.org/thinkingpoints In general, I think Obama is the best at framing issues in a progressive manner, but he screwed this one up.

On edit: I would add the quote to the opening post.

7. WOT=Just a slogan for the GOP to use (w/ link)
That's the point I was talking about.

My bad! I should have been more clear.

Romney calls for new strategy on terror

WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney called for "new course" in the fight against terrorists on Thursday and, in a swipe at Democrat John Edwards, said: "The war on terror is not a bumper sticker." Speaking to a conservative group, Romney argued that "there is a real war being waged by violent jihadists."...

5. I think its a good point, but I don't think the soundbite rings.
I like what he has to say, but the "bumper sticker politics" phrase isn't really catchy. I've heard him say it a bunch of times, but it doesn't hold onto me. And I think it's somewhat confusing. IMO, he should find a new way to say what he is saying.

10. Good point. What does that say about us?
Sometimes things that are wrong are easier to articulate and easier to digest. That leads to a lot of interesting questions about the voting public and the candidates.

11. The West Wing (the tv show) had a great name for it: 10 word answers
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 12:25 AM by ProgressiveAmPatriot
Best West Wing episode ever is when Bartlet debates! Howard Dean should get all the Dems to use some phrase like this for every bs bumpersticker/ 10 word answer whatever Republican policy. 10 word answe or something like it should be a phrase that plagues Republicans for a generation.
