Media ignores Powell bombshell
According to Powell, Bush knew that Iraq was likely to turn out just the way it has. All that time that the White House was putting out propaganda about "cakewalk" and "greeted with flowers" they all knew that Iraq was very likely not going to turn out that way. Being politicians, they had to know how unpopular the war would become, and they didn't care.

Everybody who is willing to knows that Bush lied before the war. This time, we have clear proof Bush knew he was lying. To me, lying to cover up what was probably going to come in Iraq was far worse than lying about the WMD.

TRANSCRIPT

MR. RUSSERT: Prior to the war, Walter Pincus wrote that you were provided, the president was provided some information from the CIA. Let me read it here. “On August 13th, 2003, the CIA completed a classified, six-page intelligence analysis that described the worst scenarios that could arise after a U.S.-led removal of Saddam Hussein: anarchy and territorial breakup in Iraq, a surge of global terrorism,” “a deepening of Islamic antipathy toward the United States.

“According to then-CIA director George Tenet, it was relegated to the back of a thick briefing book handed out to President Bush’s national security team for a meeting on September 7th, 2002, at Camp David where the Iraq war was topic A.” Do you remember that?

GEN. POWELL: I don’t remember specifically that book, but I’m sure it exists. But a week earlier, the 5th of August 2002, the president and I, with Dr. Rice present, had a conversation that touched on many of the likely outcomes and the realization that it would probably tie up a significant percentage of our armed forces for a long period of time, it would cost a great deal, we’re getting inside of a sectarian conflict that we would have to keep a lid on, and we would have to get Iraqis up and moving as quickly as possible in order to hand the responsibility off to them. And so I don’t think any of us were unaware of the kinds of problems that we might face. I certainly was not unaware, and I was informed by my own thinking, as well as CIA documentation, not just the one Mr. Pincus makes reference to. But all along the way, those who had experience in this part of the world and those that had experience in war understood that we were taking on something that was going to be a major burden to us for many years, and I think the president was well aware of that. And my, my judgment is that we didn’t prepare ourselves well enough for the kinds of challenges that occurred in the aftermath of the fall of Baghdad.

1. Why the hell is he talking about it NOW!!!?? Why not when it might have made a difference?
Edited on Mon Jun-11-07 09:17 PM by BrklynLiberal
Now...it will just be a footnote to the disaster. It could have gone a long way toward preventing it.

It is as meaningless as Sandra Day O'Connor bemoaning the direction the Executive Branch of the government is taking...after she was instrumental in putting that Executive into the White House.

A pox on both their houses...They could have done something, and didn't. for either or them to complain or bemoan the current situation is the ultimate of unmitigated gall.

2. Everybody pretty much knows Bush knew what he was doing...
the foreknowledge argument is totally stronger than the incompetence argument. But some people will still play the apologist and say Bush didn't know.

4. He still does not say it was wrong to go to war. he only says they did not
"prepare enough' for the second phase of the war.
That's why he's only saying it now. He's not REALLY saying it.

6. There are over 300 articles on Google News
about the Powell interview. They nearly all focus on Powell saying Guantanamo should be closed. Others reported that Powell is advising Obama. Other parts of the interview got attention elsewhere. I think that Bush knowing before the war that it was likely to turn out this badly is the huge story. It got the least attention. I was particularly disappointed that NBC News did not cover the revelation, since it was given on their network.

9. I think he's covering his arse. Sure Powell knew it and likely told Bush, but
other advisers like Cheney painted a different picture to my recollection? Still I agree this is a story that begs "some" attention.

19. Powell's resignation could have stopped the invasion!
He's still defending his theatrical farce before the world at the UN. TvNewsLIES.org pleaded with Powell to resign at that time....before the invasion....because he alone could have made a difference.

Reminder: When Powell lied to the world at the UN...TWICE, TVNL asked for his resignation....to spare the nation the horror of the impending invasion of Iraq that was so clearly based on LIES. Powell's cowardice will be his legacy:

21. Aren't soldiers brainwashed into accepting authority? That's why a Clark
candidacy worries me a little bit. Sorry if this post is offensive but I would assume some brainwashing occurs in order to keep military servicemen/women on one accord.

20. What Bush heard Powell say in that meeting. "Blah blah blah blah Iraq blah blah blah blah war."
Powell: Would you like to hear more about my postwar assessment, Mr. President? I truly think that if we rush into war, blah blah blah blah.

Bush (interrupting): No thanks, Flounderface, I've heard enough. C'mon Brown Sugar, let's hit the gym then go see what Dick and Don have planned for the victory celebration. I get to pick out my flight suit today.

Sure, they knew, they just ignored everyone who didn't agree with them.
