Well...some are suggesting...the unthinkable...

The Cheneys are residents.

Just thought I'd mention

1. Not likely, the Governor is a Democrat.
He will select the replacement from a three-person panel presented to him by the Repugs.

3. So, you just proved the point of the OP - Republics will be doing the presenting. The Democratic go
governor can only approve WHICH Republic to appoint.

4. Right. As i understand it, the Repukes will provide a list of three names to the Dem Governor...
who will select one.

Suppose the Repukes offer up -

1. Crashcart
2. Crashcart's wife
3. Some other noname knuckle-dragger

Freudenthal has to stand for election too. You think he could defend selecting the noname knuckle-dragger over either of the other two?

6. Many Repukes in WY no longer
like nor support Cheney. Wyomingites can be cantankerous and have thrown several Senators out who became too entangled "globally" and, in their estimation, forgot about Wyoming. Obviously Cheney falls into this category now. People here recognize his war fomenting is not good for Wyoming, just good for his oil industry buddies.

Moreover, the Cheneys stopped being "true Wyomingites" when they abandoned Casper and moved to oh horrors - Jackson of all places. Worse, he doesn't even go to Jackson more than once or twice a year. His real home is now in an exclusive enclave on the eastside of Chesapeake Bay! Big black mark.

Wyomingites also adore their Dem "Governor Dave." It would not be difficult for him to defend not appointing a Cheney.

8. yes
but there will be a special election to fill the remainder of the term in November, 2008, so it's conceivable that Lynne could run for it, although I doubt very much it would happen.

5. Well, at least if it was Cheney I assume he'd have to resign as VP
and presumably could do less harm as a senator than he does currently.

9. There is a precedent.
John C. Calhoun resigned as Vice President to become a Senator from South Carolina.

It's also notable that Andrew Johnson, who had served first as Vice President under Lincoln and then as President after Lincoln's assassination, returned to the Senate representing Tennessee after Reconstruction.

Hell, as a former Vice President, Senator Heartless would enjoy very special privileges which have only ever been exercised by the two Vice Presidents who preceded him in the Senate. It's a deal he might not want to pass up.
