Fred ("Swamp Thing") Thompson and the 'Laziness' Issue
June 11, 2007 issue - Does Fred Thompson have what it takes to be president? The former senator turned "Law & Order" actor, who launched an exploratory committee last week, has been dogged by rumors that he doesn't have the work ethic for a long campaign. "The book on him is he's lazy," David Keene, president of the American Conservative Union, said last week. The criticism seems fed by Thompson's time in the Senate, where he maintained a less rigorous schedule than his colleagues and was known to duck out of late-night debates. Of the 90 bills he introduced during his eight years in the Senate, only four became law.

...

In his yearbook at Lawrenceburg County High, Thompson put this quote next to his senior portrait: "The lazier a man is, the more he plans to do tomorrow."

1. I'd also like to point out his reputation for sleepiness.
Yes, a drowsy, yawning, snoozing lazybones is the Great White Hope of the Republican party.

2. He does remind you of laziness.
Not to change the subject but I need a snark comeback to this repuke regarding Thompson. Here is what he said:

"If he couldn't muster up enough courage to vote Guilty on Clinton's impeachment, he is not the man to lead us during these very dangerous times."

5. Those giant bags under his eyes may indicate
A man not prone to much physical activity. Workouts tend to invigorate kidney function which in turn tends to reduces under eyes puffiness.

I say he eats a lot, smokes CUBAN CIGARS (Michael Moore should hit back with this) and has the the young wife work up the sweat in the boudoir. (In the contrary I think Kucinich is a real animal in bed  )

7. A lot of the eye baggage is genetic, too.
JFK looked quite fit but his health was a walking disaster. I doubt he'd have lived past the age of 70. Abe Vigoda, on the other hand, spent the last 40 years of his life looking like he was about to die. My guess is that what's holding Thompson back is his health, however. He should have run in 2000, healthwise.

6. I think we can expect Thompson to under perform
At this stage in the game, forming an exploratory committee is really half-assed. As Dodd showed when he jumped in without doing the whole exploratory committee routine, a candidate is either in or out. If Thompson had the fire in the belly, he'd jump straight to square one. An exploratory committee is what you do if you're looking for a hand job. The race has started and a serious candidate needs to either start off sprinting or just skip the whole thing.

Thompson is probably going to wait another month or so before coming in--and for him that's about a month or so too long to wait.
