11. Congrats. You're a progressive woman proudly reinforcing misogyny.
You wouldn't be the first. We all have some male supremacy built into us, as a result of the culture and society we're raised in.

Some reinforce male supremacy deliberately. Some reinforce it because they are unwilling to examine their own language and what the implications of it are.

If she were black, would you post that she is "one nasty n***** b****" ? Or do you think that would be reinforcing white supremacy and racism?

17. Some thoughts on sexism and racism
Both are systems of POWER.

When you use a sexist or racist slur against groups who are oppressed, or feed into stereotypes about them, you're reinforcing their oppression, and reinforcing a system of power. And being mean.

When you use a sexist or racist slur against groups who are privileged, you're being mean.

I don't advocate using sexist or racist slurs against anyone. But the two are not equivalent, for political reasons.

A soldier in Iraq calling an Iraqi a towelhead or hadji is not the same, politically, as an Iraqi calling an invading soldier a derogatory and dehumanizing name. You see the difference?

19. I wasn't making a slur against a group of people...
just commenting that one particular woman was acting like a bitch. That use of the word really doesn't bother me, but I don't much like the term "sonofabitch" because the insult should be directed at the one behaving badly rather than his mother. (Except in the case of Bush, where it's accurate!)

21. Can you go back to my other question?
If you called her a n***** b****, would that be insulting to all blacks, you think? Would it be insulting to all women, you think?

I'm suggesting that there IS no difference. You can't use a racial slur - which insults based on your status as a member of that oppressed race - without reinforcing racism. That's why the Kramer N word - even though it was directed at an individual - was racist, not just a personal attack against those few individuals that were heckling him.

In your head, you are probably intending to just insult that one woman. But the language you chose reinforces a stereotype about women in general, who step out of line - and reinforces the idea that it's ESPECIALLY bad if you're female and you act like that.

Like with Kramer, his comments were offensive because he wasn't just saying "heckling and interrupting a performance is rude and unacceptable." He was also, on some level, revealing that he thought "not knowing how to behave is something related to these people being black." Does that make sense?

25. Honestly, all kidding aside, you're preachin' to the choir.
Edited on Fri May-25-07 05:46 PM by polichick
I've been involved with women's rights and civil rights all my life ~ even recently corresponded with Gloria Steinem, an old hero of mine.

It wasn't that Melanie stepped out of line ~ I love strong women. It's that she acted bitchy toward a fellow strong woman, so I called her on it. Used in that way, the word doesn't offend me.

I didn't address the black issue because I don't equate the words the way you do. I could've substituted the word "witch" or "snot-head" for my use of the word bitch.

(I would tell a black girlfriend that she's being a real bitch, but I wouldn't tell her she's being a real nigger.)

28. "she acted bitchy"
I don't think I AM preaching to the choir.

It's great that you fight for women's rights. But the language you are using serves to keep women, as women, in their place. Ditto with "witch".

"Snot-head" would be a great gender neutral alternative.

I'd be interested to hear the logic behind why attaching someone's race to an insult isn't equivalent to attaching their gender to an insult. I guess that's where I'm going with asking you to examine your language. "I don't equate the words" isn't really a critical examination.

Not that you have to do it here and now to appease me, but I'm at least hoping you'll reflect on it at some point, about how language like that serves to remind people that "women" or "blacks" tend to act in inappropriate ways, and how that sort of language reinforces racism and sexism in others.

I am a little at a loss as to how anyone could fight for the rights of an oppressed group, while using slurs against that group. It's confusing.

Edited on Fri May-25-07 06:13 PM by polichick
I also don't think it's quite the same for one woman to call another a bitch as it is for a man to call a woman a bitch. Same with the word nigger ~ I wouldn't use it because I'm white, but I'm not going to say that they shouldn't.

Is it okay if I call a nasty guy a prick though? That one doesn't seem to bother you.

Truth is, none of these words are necessary ~ but, used in a lighthearted way (as I meant to do), they aren't such a big deal. Maybe here it's not always clear when someone is being lighthearted.

32. I think it's worse for a white male to call someone a n***** b****
than for a black woman to say it. Slurs are always uglier coming from the group WITH privilege, aimed at the group without. We agree on that.

On a forum that's mixed of all races and genders, any group using slurs gives legitimacy to anyone else using them. That's something I have to deal with in my classroom, where the white students make up almost, but not quite, half the class. It's clear I can't tolerate a white student getting mad at a black student, and using the N word. And I can't allow most of the students to use that word, but not a subset of the students to use it. So we don't use the word in my room - even IF the black kids use it in their own homes without offense.

When you use the word b****, as a woman, you're still reinforcing the patriarchy, and the attitudes that invented that word - that equated women to dogs, to subhumans, with all the history of nonequality in the eyes of the law that that carries. When you use it here, especially in response to a man using a gender slur, you're sending him a clear message that you are okay with men using derogatory terms toward women.

36. I didn't mean to imply it's a classroom of kids.
I was discussing a similar situation, with similar dynamics, not saying this IS that situation.

I don't take slurs, sexist or racist, as a way to lighten things up, and there are a number of people on DU who are offended by these sorts of comments.

If you know you are using a slur that offends people, why continue to use it? Why go out of your way to be offensive and derogatory? In your case, you had to have known you were using the word to be offensive, not glib and lighthearted, because you were responding directly to a post objecting to sexist language. That tells me you thought about it and make a deliberate decision to use a gender slur for some reason. Given that, it's hard to imagine your intentions were anything other than going out of your way to endorse gender slurs as a part of our accepted discourse.

"Remember that everything we do matters -- even the words we choose, the language we use." -- Gloria Steinem

Yes, I know. You'd like it if people wouldn't keep infringing on your right to be offensive by being derogatory against women without someone pointing it out when it happens. It's very annoying of us to speak out against sexism, and very tiring for you to constantly be reminded that sexism - in all its forms - is offensive.

You shouldn't have to deal with the overwhelming burden of treating women with basic respect.

Everyone gets your perspective, as well.

16. Ya know
I've decided to change course in dealing with the blatant disregard of women from commentors.

For example: Boy, Chris is in a bad mood today, probably couldn't get his pencil dick up this morning.

Or: I bet the reason Chris is such a jerk to women (and hates Senator Clinton) is that he has a tiny penis.

Or: Chris is such an old hack, look at all those wrinkles, I can't stand to look at his saggy face.

Notice: calling him by his first name, referencing his sexual non-appeal instead of his opinions or what he has said. Dismissing him out of hand because he's not "pretty" enough.

Now, when a good looking guy comes on, I'll have to reference how I want to "hit that." Or maybe something along the lines of how he's not good for much but his big dick.

Or how about: what a stupid asshole, but if he kept his mouth shut, he'd be hot!1!!!11!!!

It's kind of a stretch for me to think that way, but when people just don't get it when you ask them to treat half the members of the human race with respect and dignity, I guess I might have to try another tactic.
