Two-month Iraq spending bill ‘very likely’
A two-month spending bill to cover the costs of the Iraq war is “very likely” after President Bush vetoes the current Iraq spending bill, House Defense Appropriations Chairman John Murtha (D-Pa.) said Friday.

House Democrats named their conferees at the beginning of this week and they are to meet Monday, though much of the work on the conference report has been done. The conference report is expected to include an “advisory” date for the withdrawal of troops, rather than the firm September 2008 deadline included in the House version of the bill.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said he expects the bill will be sent to Bush by late next week or the following Monday.

Either stop the war now or give Petraeus until the end of the year. Don't paralyze Congress by deciding to make bi-monthly appropriations.

1. Unfortuently that's politics
You can only create legislation that can pass and sadly in this Congress a spending bill with a binding "withdrawal" just won't pass with a stubborn white house and a one vote majority in the Senate with LIEberman the warmonger as the decider.

I just wish the american people would just support just flat out cutting the funds to end this war. People's opinions outside DU are lukewarm on this issuw cause there afraid by doing this there putting the troops in harm's war and god forbid "not supporting the troops". But in retrospect your not supporting the troops if you oppose cutting off the funds of the war, because if your a opponent of this war and for contunuing funding the war your not really supporting the troops because there still there, there not coming home to there families.

Support the troops by cutting the funds, it's the right thing to do.

2. The Problem is that the President has the power
to shift massive funds from the Pentagon budget for the Air Force and the Navy to fund the Iraq War.

Bush could actually keep the war going until he is out of office while destorying the readiness of the Air Force and Navy.

4. although he is now saying it will be shifted from
"personnel accounts" - more scare tactics - he stopped just short today of suggesting it would take food out of their children's mouths

5. I actually kind of like the idea.
That way the country focuses every two months. Its one way of forcing accountability. I don't want to wait until the end of the year to start getting a sense of where Iraq is going. If things are unchanged or worse after two months, Bush and the 21 Republican Senators up for re-election in 2008 need their feet held to the fire. Then just repeat it every two months until November 2008.
