Are Congressmen REALLY Aware of their roles as 'Servants to the People'?

“Voters want change that is for real”. That head under yesterday’s Letters section of the AZ Republic grabbed my attention.

The writer stated, “The Democrats were right when they said the American people voted for change. What they (politicians) didn’t hear was that we wanted a change in how government worked, not just the faces in Washington

“Now it appears the Democrats didn’t hear the whole message and are starting to do the same things (as their Republican predecessors did). When will politicians understand that many Americans no longer care about party affiliation or the longevity of the party in power. They need to care about real change for Americans and we, the people, don’t care who gets the credit. Just do it!”

That letter started me on a rant.

Congressmen stop concentrating on your re-election and get the job done you were mandated to do:

-Get us out of the Iraqi Civil War.

-Bring home what is left of our troops and give them the care they will need to restore their physical and mental health. This is where the “surge” funds should be going.

-Bring back the National Guard so it can take of the needs of Americans in light of the catastrophic events being played out in this country from global warming. The hurricane season is fast approaching!

-Quit playing “footsie” with Bush. Stop him! It may not be a popular move with some your constituents but DO IT for the sake of your country.

-Get rid of Gonzalez.

-Get America back on track while there is anything left of her to save.

Have I left anything out?

1. The higher the office, the farther away from the people they get.
I have always believed that the only really connected politicians are the ones in the local town hall.

2. They see the People as their personal servants
Just take a look at the Democratic Party's attitude towards gay people in any of the elections since 1990. We are expected to service them without voice or question; if we dare express anything other than blindly enthusiastic support we get beaten quite severely. But God forbid (quite literally, apparently) they should ever lift a finger to do anything for us.

3. Absolutely!!!
They know that they are servants to the people who contribute the kind of big bux it takes to get elected.
The rest of us can just piss off.

4. The only "people" they serve are the "people" who are "people" by virtue
of corporate personhood.

5. Of course not
As soon as they get to DC, they're treated like royalty. And like the worst spoiled celebrity, they believe the fawning sycophants who fall all over themselves blowing smoke up their asses.

Power corrupts and it doesn't even have to be absolute power.

About the only one of my elected officials who didn't think he's more important than the rest of us was Chaffee, a republican of all things. A silver spoon republican, which makes his personality even more uncommon.

Even Jack Reed, whom I adore, takes himself a little too seriously. Good luck getting a meeting with any of these people. Actually, if you've got money to donate they give you a meeting any time.

6. All this shows, once again, is that they are a club first and foremost, and they
will protect each other regardless of our wishes, or how egregious their fellow members offenses. As long as we continue to shrug our shoulders saying, "you can't fight city hall" and go back to our disinterested slumber, they will continue to ignore us and do what they damn well please.

The fact remains that we have no choice as long as we accept their lies. Where is our Huey Long?

9. They know that. But, they also know that...
too many are not paying attention, so many will opt to milk the system for all it's worth.

11. Especially Republicans
A lot of republicans don't even pretend to be servants of the people. They are servants only to corporate America and their rich friends. In certain districts, why pretend? Scum.
