Clinton holds big lead -- if Gore's out (Gore 2nd in CA @ 25%)

New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton holds a solid advantage with Californians likely to vote in the Feb. 5 Democratic presidential primary, but an old friend could significantly change the math should he decide to run, according to a Field Poll released Monday.

Former Vice President and 2000 party nominee Al Gore, who has waved off speculation that he may run again -- but has not ruled it out entirely -- pulled to within a handful of percentage points of Clinton when pollsters added his name to the mix.

(snip)

The poll found Clinton with a comfortable 13-point head start over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, 41 percent to 28 percent, with former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards lagging at 13 percent.

But when Gore's name was offered as an alternative, Clinton's support dropped 10 points to 31 percent, followed by Gore's 25 percent and Obama's 21 percent. Edwards fell to 8 percent.

3. Well
Speaking as a Brit, Al Gores star is certainly rising outside of the US, especially on the back of "The Inconvenient Truth", he's probably the candidate best able to heal the rift cause by the psycho chimp and his handlers

Al's not my #1 choice overall but he'd move to the top if he entered this field.

9. Gore hasn't ruled out running again
"If (Al) was going to run in the future, of course I would support him. I think he'd be a fantastic president. He already got a majority of votes of people in this country once, and so that says something."

18. It's not merely name recognition - - Gore keeps rising in the polls
He's getting very little coverage in the media, as opposed to Clinton and Obama and even Edwards.

13. You know what I think would be incredibly interesting.
Gore as Pres, and Hillary as V.P. Then once we get this whole mess straightened out, if Hillary wants to run as Pres., we probably could withstand two terms of damage of her pro-commerce platform.

Did I just say that out loud?

how this should worry Hillary only when Gore pulls just about the same percentage of voters away from each of the other candidates across the board. I find that interesting that the other candidates each have a built in Gore factor- at this point- no matter what their slice of the big pie currently is. If there is some statistically meaningful thing going on here I would be curious to know. It obviously is much bigger than even "Watch out Hillary".

I am not a big fan of the polling game period. The money game is a prime threat to democracy per se. The media circus ditto. Yet within all that democracy survives and the abused elements of politics still can be won by decent people. There is an extremely unfair advantage given to the GOP image when horrible political or character entities(even by GOP standards!)somehow thrive better than competent honest and charismatic leaders from either party. And are given the presumption of being "winners" and a sense of being favorites. The dismally flatulent polling seems to put a lot of ham sandwiches on a level playing with the deserving. Al I am reminded of, especially when polling results, notoriously ambiguous, are popularity polls where the First lady who could be wearing a potato sack and filling it appropriately, is usually the "Best dressed Woman in America". If there was a serious vote for the title and not some smarmy pageant with basking celebrity judges I would wager too the results would get quite different. But all the media would think in this case too would be that the First lady, the representative of all that strange benefit, would be the "one to beat" even if you kept pointing out to them she's dressed like
Wicked Witch of the East. The frontrunner in any political race could be mainly the recipient of the deceptive benefit and the curse of such a low level of judgment.

17. A repuke I know surprised me the other day by
endorsing Gore. Hopes he runs and plans to vote for him if he does. When I asked why, he said, "He's the most experienced guy out there and what the country needs to get back on track."

He's the only Dem candidate who could blow the race wide open and win big. I hope he runs. The country really does need him.

22. And?
Just once I would like to see a poll of how many people in this country are actually taking action themselves against this climate crisis as Mr. Gore has asked. If I also recall, Mr. Gore stated a while ago that he wasn't interested in polls, and also was frustrated with the toxicity of this process, which you obviously don't care about... but then why should you when you are using him to collect thousands of dollars for God knows what.

23. Constant reminder
Gore's presence in the contest would be a constant reminder to the public that six years ago, if he had been sworn into the office to which he was elected, there would have been no war and this country would still be respected in the world. He has spent those six years productively but, oh, he could have done so much more as President. What was done to him was a tragedy for the country. People now know that more than ever.
