Senate Dems: Let's Talk
By Paul Kiel - March 23, 2007, 3:44 PM

Following House Democrats yesterday, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) held a press conference today to send a simple message: let's talk.

As Schumer put it:

I hope the White House recognizes a ten letter word, C-O-M-P-R-O-M-I-S-E. That’s what its all about. And now both parties at this end of Pennsylvania want to sit down and negotiate, but we’re waiting for the White House.

Schumer pointed to Sen. Arlen's Specter (R-PA) proposal to the White House yesterday as an indication that both Republicans and Democrats thought the White House offer of a private meeting with no oath and no transcript was unacceptable. Specter proposed to allow the aides to be questioned publicly by just a limited number of lawmakers without putting them under oath. "When you have the lead Democrat and the lead Republican closer to one another that the White House is to either of them, it really puts a burden on the White House," Schumer said.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) -- who's said he doesn't see what "all the hubbub is about" -- met with White House counsel Fred Fielding today to discuss the dispute.

1. What the fuck is there to compromise about?
Testimony not taken under oath is worthless. And we the people have the right to know what was said. Anything less is unacceptable.

4. Especially
testimony not taken under oath from a republican is incredibly worthless. They place so much value in being under oath as if it doesn't matter whether they lie if they are not under oath and they only fear getting in trouble if they lie under oath.

9. To have the support of the public they need to offer them chance to appear voluntarily
If they refuse then subpoena. They just need to make sure that time frame is not too long.

10. There are some things Democrats should do as Republicans and other things that
they should do which makes them appear better in the public eye.

And it also depends on who the Republican is in the situation. Senator Imahoe OK-R for example. Senator Boxer put him down during the Gore hearing.

7. Schumer & Feinstein Saying Let's Talk Makes It Look Like The Dems Are In A Weakened ...
position. In fact - they are dealing from a level of strength and the WH is in the weak position.

The Dems should just stonewall now. Give the WH a deadline of say Tues of next week to come up with a better plan. Under oath. In public. With transcript. etc - If they don't issue the subpoena's at the end of the day Tuesday. Case closed.

8. To a Republican, compromise has always meant
"Do it our way, and we'll blame you when it doesn't work!"
