White House Says It Hopes Attorney General Gonzales Survives
Calls for His Resignation

By HOPE YEN

WASHINGTON Mar 19, 2007 (AP)— Amid bipartisan calls for the resignation
of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in the wake of a scandal surrounding
dismissals of eight federal prosecutors, the White House said Monday,
"We hope he stays."

When asked if Gonzales will serve for the rest of President Bush's term,
White House press secretary Tony Snow said, "Well, we hope so."

Gonzales is under fire for the removal of eight U.S. attorneys and the
bungled way in which their firings was explained to Congress.

Bush has expressed confidence in Gonzales and defended the removal of
the prosecutors, but also voiced frustration that lawmakers were not
provided straightforward information.

7. Yep. He's been handed his walking papers. Otherwise...
...the statement from the White House would be "He's staying--period."

11. Of course they "hope he stays"
He has more work to do. The empire isn't complete. There's still hope that we can salvage our nation. Once there is no hope left, his job will be done and they can tell Gonzo to go Cheney himself.

15. Doesn't Mr. Gonzales serve at the pleasure of the president?
Certainly that was the phrase du jour all the jours last week. Isn't it up to The Decider to decide whether Gonzales stays on? From all I've heard out of the White House since this thing blew up in their insipid little faces, this is George W. Bush's world, and we live in it at his sufferance. Why doesn't The Decider just decide that Gonzales, like Rumsfeld before him, will stay in his position for the rest of Mr. Bush's presidency?

And if it comes to that, beyond. After all, Clinton did a Very, Very Bad Thing when he appointed his own U.S. Attorneys upon taking office in 1993. Whoever succeeds George W. Bush should avoid doing a similar Very, Very Bad Thing, and keep Gonzales as Attorney General. Gonzales as Attorney General for life! This minor, totally political fracas is surely not enough reason to reverse a George W. Bush Decision.
